The Experience
Spot red deer in the garden and eagles soaring overhead at this remote island retreat. This solid whitewashed farmhouse stands on the only road running along Jura’s east coast. Grassy fields and heather-covered hills stretch into the distance, while you can gaze across the Sound of Jura. Inside, glass doors and big windows frame the sublime views and fill the house with light. There’s a cosy sitting room with window seats inviting you to look seawards and a fire for nippy nights. You can buy supplies in the Craighouse shop a couple of miles away and cook in the bright, modern kitchen. Cheerful bedrooms are decorated in floral fabrics and overlook the garden or sea; simple bathrooms are stocked with local, malt whiskey-scented soaps! If you crave a dram of the real thing, you can hire bikes and cycle to the Jura distillery for a guided tour and a wee taste. Keen birdwatchers will be in heaven here, with greylag geese, oystercatchers and herons all resident in the surrounding fields. But if you prefer more active pursuits, you can go beachcombing along the coast, or conquer the Paps of Jura…

“We loved Feolin Farmhouse – really cosy and comfortable – so close to the shore – swimming and walks. A good base to explore Jura from! Thank you.”

Feolin Farmhouse is a very comfortable house that is well kitted out and it comfortably takes the eight. Its in a fantastic location with great views, deer and geese in the front fields, seals growling at each other on the beach below and plenty of space and privacy. The support team is brilliant - great housekeeping and local advice. This year brought midges and a gale but we still had a whale of a time.

Local points of interest from Sally Steed
- Jura comes from the Norse words meaning Deer Island. Over 6,500 deer live on Jura, with the human population being about 300. There are over 100 species of birds, including Golden Eagles, as well as wild goats, seals, rabbits, hares, stoats and otters.
- Jura is 29 miles long and 7 miles wide. It is virtually wild in the west, and is occupied by the three Paps of Jura. Known in Gaelic as The Mountain of Sound, The Mountain of Gold and The Sacred Mountain.
- The novelist George Orwell stayed on the island at Barnhill. Orwell lived there intermittently from 1946 until January 1949. He completed his final novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, at Barnhill.
- Craighouse is the "capital" of Jura. It is 8 miles from the ferry and the place for food and drink. The Jura Community Shop is located in Craighouse,.
- Jura Boat Tours offer bespoke RIB tours to various areas of outstanding natural beauty around the island’s shores, giving the opportunity to enjoy the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, raised beaches, lighthouses and caves.
- Jura Island Tours offer short and full island tours with stops along the way taking in the history, culture, wildlife and stunning beauty of Jura.

We had such a good time at Feolin farmhouse - with our usual collection of activities including going up the Paps, swimming in the sea every morning, singing by the fire, and enjoying the folk festival. Thank you for making the house so beautiful and welcoming.
