The Experience

Walk straight in to a hallway with wooden floors, lots of wellies waiting for you and hooks for coats – this is grand walking country. Then into the library which has a gorgeous mix of fiction, non-fiction, local interest, nature books and children’s books – pick something interesting and settle here or take it to the sitting room where you’ll find comfy armchairs, sofa and wood-burning stove.

The open-plan kitchen is well equipped and has basics for cooking in the cupboards along with locally-roasted coffee. You eat at a round table facing the views. On warm days you can open the doors to the terrace and garden where birds are trilling away and you may spot a red squirrel.

Bedrooms are up separate staircases: bright and pretty with well-dressed beds; the bathroom has botanical soaps and views over the garden. There’s an extra loo and utility room downstairs. Walks start from the door.

Reviews

Unbend here with sea views that go on and on, wonderful local food, boat trips and beach days – it's a grand place for a family holiday.

Lutz, Lauret

The house is very beautiful, in a stunning setting with great views over the Kyle of Bute, tastefully furnished with a very homely feel. The kitchen is well appointed and there are easy walks directly from the house, as well as a good indian restaurant and two nice tearooms in walking distance. A boat tour from the Tighnabruaich pier, over the Kyle of Bute, was fun, too. Thanks to Rebecca who was very helpful.

Mark, York

My wife and I enjoyed a great holiday at lvybank in May. The house was very comfortable and clean with everything needed for our stay. The location is exceptional with stunning views to match the fabulous weather we were lucky enough to enjoy. There are numerous beautiful walks to explore the local area, as well as the cruise around the loch. We hope to visit Ivybank and Tighnabruaich again in the future.

Flora, Edinburgh

My family and I stayed at Ivybank for a week in December and had a great time. The weather left a lot to be desired, but the views from the house are so amazing that it was still stunning to watch the rain clouds roll in from Arran. We went for a lot of beautiful walks (locally and in the community woodland, Ostel Bay, Glenan Wood). The house has the best equipped kitchen of any holiday rental I have ever stayed in and feels very homey. I particularly enjoyed settling down in the library with a good book, and the wood burner made our evenings very cosy.

William, Edinburgh

Beautiful location, stunning views from the house which is stylishly decorated and well-equipped and an abundance of good walks both from the house and in the surrounding area. Very comfortable accommodation and a wonderful viewing platform outside the front door, perfect for a morning coffee and a spectacular view down the Kyles of Bute. Can’t fault it and will certainly return.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Loch Lomond and Cowal Way passes through the village. Bring or hire bikes - cycling along quiet roads with such views will be sublime – you may see golden eagles, otters, seals, porpoises, deer. There's a spa at Portavadie Marina (six miles) and a lovely beach at Ostel Bay – a 10-minute drive. You can order food to be delivered, local venison and vegetables, fish from Loch Fyne. Visit the Botanic Garden at Benmore.

Local points of interest from Rebecca Wexler

  • You are 10 minutes drive from the peaceful swimming beach at Ostel Bay. It is a good place to bird watch. The walk to the beach is enjoyable in itself. Sit under the trees at The Bothy cafe and if you are lucky, a robin may take crumbs from your hand.
  • Open the door and walk! Left takes you round the coast, and you will pass a thundering waterfall. This is part of The Cowal Way.
  • If you feel like pampering yourself, Portavadie Marina is only 5 miles away. It has an excellent restaurant too. Worth a special visit, is the ancient rainforest accessible here. It is full of mosses and lichens, gnarled trees and bird song.
  • There are plenty of places to eat and drink in and near Tighnabruaich; If tea and cake, or brunch is what you fancy, walk to Five West or The Tea Room in the village. For a delicious curry go to Fyne Raja. Or enjoy sitting outside at Wild Kitchen in Kames.
  • Tighnabruaich is very proud of its award winning Argyll coffee Roasters. Their coffee is sold locally and also enjoyed in the cafes. After sampling the coffee, visit Argyll Botany at Kilfinan forest and stock up on naturally scented soaps and lotions.
  • Looking out at the sailing boats passing by, may make you want to join them! Carry Farm runs an excellent sailing school for all ages in the summer months. When you hear the Waverely Paddle steamer approaching, go and enjoy the bustle as it docks.
