The Experience

Just a short walk from the house is the perfect picnic or barbecue spot. On balmy days you can paddle in the boat, swim in the water, watch swans at sunset and warm yourselves by the fire pit as stars emerge. Indoors is equally pleasing with bold colours, comfortable seating and a nifty kitchen – you’re left a generous welcome pack, but if you prefer you can choose ready-to-eat meals from the estate kitchen.

Two pretty bedrooms (one up, one down) have en suite showers with estate soaps and lotions – if you want a bath it’s outside in the open garden with fabulous views over the water and much greenery. You should feel nicely enveloped in nature with plenty of birdlife.

It’s three miles to Portpatrick and The Crown pub, a post office and shop, brewery and golf course. Or join in with activities on the estate – from clay pigeon shooting to archery. Mostly you’ll want to just stay in this restful haven.

We think you'll love

  • Having an early morning swim in the smooth lake before breakfast – it's so tranquil here
  • Eschewing the car and walking to the pub and back – you'll earn your lunch
  • The wonderful views – artists and photographers will feel inspired

  • It's not very easy to get here by public transport. There's one bus a day from Stranraer to Portpatrick, then it's a three-mile walk
  • The house is family friendly (with extra pull-out beds) but better for older children who can swim

Location

The neighbourhood

There's much to do on the estate without going far. Plenty of outdoor fun can be arranged and there are wonderful woodland walks for bird spotting, castle ruins, clifftop walks with views all the way to Ireland and glorious beaches. Portpatrick can provide most of what you need and you can organise a tour of the brewery. Stranraer is eight miles for a very pretty harbour and boat trips.

Local points of interest from Anne Tristine Nguyen

  • You're not simply staying in a Castle Estate: you are staying on one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Dunskey Estate boasts two waterfalls, two lochs, and three beaches, with the most magnificent walks along the craggy Scottish coastline.
  • Two lochs nestle into the hills and rhododendron banks. Wander along the glen walk past a rushing waterfall, and a babbling brook, to the two beaches to spot dolphins and seals. Dunskey Golf Course and the picturesque Portpatrick Harbour is 2minutes away.

The dedication to sustainability here is paramount with nearly 100% of their energy renewable, the composting of 100% of their food waste and water from a fresh spring.
