The Experience

A remarkable escape deep in the Scottish Highlands set against the backdrop of 16th-century Ballone Castle. Your timber-clad, one-storey, open-plan cabin is toasty, filled with beautiful ANTA homewares and fabrics, and deeply peaceful inside and out.

Glide the sliding door to your bedroom open and gaze from your balcony over Ballone beach and out to the Moray Firth. Swim here on fine days, or any day if you’re brave. Warm up with a dram when you return, read a book, cook a nourishing meal on the electric Aga. Outside there is a long, hedge-lined garden with a veggie patch you may plunder. It’s a fine spot for barbecues or spotting finches, siskins, oyster catchers and more.

Portmahomack is a five-minute drive for a shop that’s well stocked with all the essentials. For fresh-as-can-be seafood, try The Oystercatcher. Walk off your indulgence on the coastal path, explore Pictish stones, catch the ferry to Cromarty.

Reviews

What a wonderful place for a holiday! The cottage is so well designed, cosy and welcoming, with unique ANTA tweed fabric walls in the bedroom and their lovely stoneware in the kitchen. Also, with its doors going out onto the balcony, great views of the beach and the Moray Firth beyond. Imagine lying in bed at night, watching the moon and the stars, as well as hearing the wind and the waves!

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a secluded spot with nothing to disturb your reverie yet it's a short drive to Portmahomack, a pretty fishing village with a heritage museum, nine-hole golf course and a well-stocked shop and post office, open seven days a week. Tain (11 miles) is a bit bigger with more choice. Dornoch Cathedral (20 miles) is impressive and Cromarty (17 miles) has a cinema. Or you could just stay put.

Local points of interest from Stella Stewart

  • Tarbatness peninsula is a beautiful area of the Highlands with epic coastal walks, elemental weather and incredible wildlife.
  • Wander down to Portmahomack for a sandy beach day and have lunch or a tea at the Oystercatcher, the Castle Hotel pub or the golf course cafe. You can also hire paddle boards from the shop.
  • Portmahomack has a little shop which stocks all you would need for your stay, however there is Tain (15 mins drive) with a selection of supermarkets.
  • There are many activities such as a trip to ANTA where you can buy handmade Scottish home and giftware and paint your own mug. You can take a tour of the local whisky distillery Glenmorangie or visit local historic sties.
  • Tarbatness is just off the NC500, you can take day trips from here to all the main locations on the route such as Sutherland, Caithness and the west coast.
  • A car is recommended to get to the cottage however you could manage by taking the train to Fearn and cycling to the cottage or taking a taxi.
