The Experience

This interesting property (one of two on the site) has been built by local craftsmen using local stone. High vaulted ceilings, huge landscape windows, a sauna, an egg shaped bath with a view, hi-tech kitchen, log burner; you will actually be hoping for bad weather… Owner Rachel can organise a day’s walking and photography, kayak rental, or order in plenty of fresh seafood if you feel like cooking – in-house caterers if you don’t.

The architectural design will take your breath away, as will the location: built into the side of a hill overlooking Ullapool. Sit back, looking towards the Summer Isles and the sunsets – and let the scenery do the changing for you. Find organic highland soaps, air source heating, limestone floors, bamboo tops; green thinking combined with stylish ideas.

Walk the hill paths behind the house, stroll into Ullapool for restaurants and live music, take a boat trip to visit the islands.

Reviews

This is a Highland eyrie and no mistaking. Looking out the landscape windows one has the impression of flying out over Loch Broom. The spaces are stunning, barely a straight wall in sight and the attention to detail exemplary. Charming Ullapool is just below, yet a quick drive away and you'll have some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery to explore. Come, rain or shine this is a very special place

Location

The neighbourhood

Ullapool is on the doorstep, a ten-minute walk at most for shops and The Highland Liquor Company. The best food option is The Dipping Lugger but it is small so book ahead. If you like outdoor eating then try the very well reviewed Seafood Shack (much loved by Mary Berry). Try sea kayaking, canoeing, hill climbing, cruising and fly fishing or simply set off on glorious walks with grand scenery.

  • Ullapool is a picturesque but vibrant coastal community with a number of good restaurants and shops. The village is renowned as a cultural centre with live music events and festivals throughout the year
  • Ullapool is a perfect centre for exploring one of the wildest areas of Scotland - Wester Ross, Assynt Coigach and to the very North West tip of Scotland.
  • Within easy striking distance are almost deserted sandy beaches, majestic mountains, single track rounds that take your breath away around almost every corner, hidden communities with a surprising number of artist studios, craft shops and quirky eateries.
  • Possibilities for active days out abound including Hill walking, mountain climbing, sea kayaking, angling, wildlife cruises can be organised with local guides or independently.
  • More sedentary days can be spent by beaches, lochs and waterfalls or in the local cafes and restaurants.
  • Stimulating days can be spent seeking out ancient castles and sites, visiting the UNESCO recognised North West Geopark or RSPB bird sanctuaries and nesting grounds, or the more recent historic sites of the Second World War Arctic Convoys.

Introducing

Gavin & Rachel Anderson

Rachel and Gavin have lived and worked overseas but were always looking to return to Scotland. The idea of building something truly unique was important to them and with the help of local architects and builders this has become a reality. They live on-site at the bottom of the hill and always try to meet you and settle you in.
