The Experience

Take a winding path through wild gorse and native shrubs to this timber-clad cabin tucked beside the loch, with big windows gazing across still water to distant hills beyond. Designed by local architects and thoughtfully furnished by owners Sarah and Sophie, this modern bothy feels as though it evolved from the landscape itself. No TV, no fuss – just birdsong, books, and the ever-changing Highland light.

Inside, the open-plan space is cosy and clever: a sofa bed made up and waiting, art on the walls, puzzles and paperbacks in easy reach. Add a pink pebble to the guest-made path, curl up on the deck with binoculars and a dram, and watch the weather sweep in from the sea (on still winter nights, you can see the Northern Lights ripple above the loch).

Wander into Glenelg for a pint and live music from local bands, or take a trip to Skye on the last remaining hand-operated turntable ferry in the world.

We think you'll love

  • The Scandi-Scottish vibe – the owners’ creative flair shines through in every thoughtful detail
  • The utterly remote, peaceful setting surrounded by nature
  • Seeing warblers, stonechats and goldfinches from the deck, or cormorants, oystercatchers, even eagles, from the beach

Reviews

Sophie and Sarah's creative flair and desire to provide a place for rest and recovery has succeeded, here and at Taigh Whin in Glenelg and at Feada Coille in Sheildaig. They are all places to restore and connect with the natural world. The scenery and views from every window are stunning and they clearly have a passion to promote Scotland and all it has to offer.

Location

The neighbourhood

Nearby Glenelg (less than a mile) has a cracking pub, and an independent grocers stocked with fruit, veg, local meats, pies, beers, wine and spirits. The community hall hosts live music, and there’s a (summer) ferry to Skye. You can hire canoes, and there are fishing and yacht charters too. Good cycling and hiking routes all around.

Local points of interest from Sarah MacLaren & Sophie Howarth

  • Our community-owned ferry the MV Glenachulish is the last manually operated turntable ferry in the world and makes the spectaular short crossing to Skye.
  • Bernera Beach - directly in front of the cabin - offers white sands and sheltered waters bursting with wildlife and perfect for a wild swim.
  • The beautiful and atmospheric Sandaig bay, immortalised in 'Ring of Bright Water' is a perfect place to spot otters and seals.
  • The cosy and atmospheric Glenelg Inn serves some of the finest food anywhere in Scotland.
  • Easy access to a range of Scotland's most impressive mountains - from the famous Five Sisters of Kintail, to the Black Cuillin of Skye
  • Dun Telve and Dun Troddan - two of Scotland's best preserved Iron Age brochs can be found nearby.
