The Experience

Wildlife fans will spot whales, dolphins, eagles, seals, otters and deer; wander through tall grasses sprinkled with bluebells, wild garlic and rare orchids. Stride over stunning hills, cycle your socks off, fish from the shore – there’s much to do and see from your award-winning architect-designed retreat on the hill. Inside is equally invigorating: floor to ceiling windows for long and wide views, a crisply dressed bed, super shower room, a sofa facing the sea and a sleek kitchen on the side.

You’ll feel very private: lovely Ian and Robbie are just down the hill but you can’t see them and they can’t see you. Instead they leave you alone with tasty biscuits and a good bottle of wine. If it all sounds too rustic for you then take heart! There’s a widescreen TV with Sky, WiFi, and a smart music system – even if it’s raining you’ll feel happy here.

We were lucky enough to stay for a week at this amazing spot on a quiet part of the Isle of Skye. Pre-arrival information was excellent. Our hosts gave us a very warm welcome. An Airigh sits on the hillside of the croft with amazing views over the loch. The accommodation was excellent with everything we could possibly need and spotless. Very comfortable bed. We were happy to stay fairly local and enjoyed some nearby walks and observed the wildlife which included eagles, dolphins, Minke whale, gannets and seals. Amazing. We would thoroughly recommend An Airigh.

An Airigh was the most inspiring escape for us! Awesome views over Loch Dunvegan and the white coral beach in Claigan, and access to nearby Dunvegan with its historic connections and atmospheric castle. This striking, but simple, corrugated steel contemporary "cottage" is immaculately equipped and set in the grounds of a croft owned by our lovely hosts. No detail missed - including complimentary wine and biscuits! We had the best stay here and have already put in a reservation request for next year!

An Airigh is set beautifully overlooking Loch Dunvegan. The views are spectacular, even when the weather isn’t so good. There is everything you could wish for in terms of creature comforts and information. Robbie and Ian were charming, welcoming but unobtrusive. We had a lovely week at An Airigh. Even on a dull day the views across Loch Dunvegan are stunning. Wildlife was never far away with Buzzards circling in the skies, deer visiting in the evenings or gannets on their travels across the Loch. Ian and Robbie were very helpful hosts and put much thought into the furnishings and equipment of An Airigh. Finding all Ordnance Survey walking maps for the area and walk books was a real treat. Even though An Airigh is almost at the end of the road there is plenty to explore nearby and the Three Chimneys restaurant is only a 12 minute drive away.

Our stay was fantastic, helped out by the gorgeous weather but even so I think it would have been great anyway as An Airigh was perfect for us. The views are spectacular and we particularly enjoyed watching the three Sea Eagles ‘jousting’ or courting, we couldn’t make our minds up which, directly outside - it was amazing! We didn’t want for anything at your lovely holiday home

Location

The neighbourhood

Galtrigill is a small crofting township beside Loch Dunvegan - it's pretty much the 'end of the line' so there's no passing traffic. The nearest village shop, post office and the lovely Café Lephin is at Glendale, a 15-minute drive. Dunvegan is 25 minutes for Fasgadh Stores, the Fruit and Nut Place, a good bakery and The Dunvegan for informal, relaxed dining.

Local points of interest from Ian McLean

  • We are a short drive away from The Three Chimneys Restaurant
  • Dunvegan Head is a short 1 hour walk to the highest sea cliff on Skye with stunning 360 degree view of the Western Isles, Macleods Tables, The Cuillin and the Trotternish Ridge.
  • Neist Point - There is a Lighthouse and rocks reputed to be same formation that reaches over to the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. It’s a great place for fishing, wildlife such as dolphins, whales and sea birds as well as glorious sunsets.
  • Dunvegan Castle - Is Scotland’s oldest inhabited castle: you can explore the grounds and the beautiful walled garden. From there you can take seal boat trips.
  • Coral Beach - The white sandy beach is directly across the loch from An Airigh, made from unique calcified seaweed. It’s a beautiful natural place whatever the weather and the clear water looks so inviting. During very low tides you can cross the causeway.

Introducing

Ian McLean

Charming Ian and Robbie, great lovers of nature, swapped their London city jobs for a complete lifestyle change and are now crofters. They have Hebridean sheep, a vegetable garden with polytunnel and they planted the meadow in front of you as well as many trees. They came to Skye for the landscape, the wildlife and hill-walking and they hope you love it as much as they evidently do.
