The Experience

A quiet bay, soft green hills, big skies, a single-track road… The views from this whitewashed 19th-century crofter’s cottage are as peaceful and calm as it gets. But that doesn’t mean it’s back-to-basics. Although traditional on the outside, inside the cottage is stylishly cool with a Scandi-design touch. White tongue-and-groove panelled walls and open-raftered ceilings create luminous, airy spaces. Step straight into a small but perfectly formed, bright and contemporary kitchen. Move up two steps into a wood-floored living space carefully set with Danish-style furniture, wood and peat-burning stove and designer lighting. Limited edition prints and shots of colour add warmth; the deepset window adds cosiness. The bedroom is beautifully uncluttered with soft grey colours and simple furnishings; the pretty bathroom crisp and shiny. There’s a useful outhouse (with washer and drier) for bike storage and clothes drying; this is Skye, remember. Come here to walk, cycle, take photos, wildlife-spot – there’s a small front garden, terrace and a meadow. Or explore Portree, 5 miles. Peace and tranquillity guaranteed.

Rachel, Toronto

My husband and I stayed here for two nights to relax and go hiking in Skye just days before our wedding. The Crofter’s house was perfect. The place was impeccable clean and tidy, and the decor is so perfectly simple with lovely modern touches. The surroundings are a breathtaking scene to wake up to ... The cottage is also very conveniently located...a very short walk to the water where you can have lunch watching the tides, and just a 10 min drive to Portree where you’ll find lovely shops, restaurants and music....... i can’t stress how much we loved your little cottage. We hope to come back..

Lovely little cottage, very well equipped for lengthy stays, thoughtfully decorated and surrounded by peace and quiet. We loved our stay and couldn’t recommend it more! Sarah was a great host and very easy to communicate with.

This was the dream place to stay on our honeymoon. We loved the house and how central is was to Portree. if you are looking for your Scotland fairytale this place is it. Sarah was responsive and organized and the fire was an incredible plus. We would recommend Loch Bay for dinner (soooo good). Hiking is everywhere, but we did the Quiraing (if you like hiking don’t just do the view point, go all the way into the park for a truly epic view) And while you are in that park of town check out Single Track for coffee and cakes. (Their soup was also superb) Thanks Sarah for the amazing trip!

Maggie, Denver

Sarah’s cottage was absolutely adorable! She provided great directions since it’s slightly off the beaten track and was very easy to communicate with. The house was wonderfully furnished and in a very central location. I would definitely recommend staying here. Thanks, Sarah for a lovely few days on Skye.

Steven, Gent

Lovely "real" cottage. Very cozy and well designed interior, love the scandinavian touch. The Crofter's House is fortunately one of the best cottage on Skye, highly recommended. The kitchen is well equipped. Spacious bedroom with very comfortable bed. The cottage is well supplied with electric heaters and wood-burner for colder days. Camastianavaig is a lovely base to explore Skye and only 10min drive from Portree. No sea view from the cottage but only a few steps down gives a wonderful view over Camastianavaig Bay and the Island Raasay in front. Can't wait to come back.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sarah Chesworth

  • An original 1830's crofter's cottage updated for modern living. Above Camustianavaig Bay, at the foot of Ben Tianavaig, the house enjoys a rural location, yet is only five miles from Portree. The house is small and stylish, perfect for a hideaway for two.
  • The Crofter's House is the perfect size for a Highland retreat for two and has recently been completely renovated with minimal styling and calm spaces.
  • The living room has a wood/peat-burning stove, small sofa, table and chairs.
  • No TV, but WiFi for streaming on your own devices
  • Camustianavaig is quiet with a rural feel. The house is a two minute walk from the bay and wildlife includes seals, sea eagles, otters, basking sharks, dolphins - and local sheep. Restaurants, pubs and shops are five miles away in Portree.
  • There is a bus from Camustianavaig to Portree in the morning, and one that returns in the evening. Otherwise, you'll need a car or bike - there is room to park a car in the garden and shelter for two bikes in the shed.
