The Experience
Your converted barn is one of four self-catering properties set around a courtyard. Susan and her family live in the farmhouse and will greet you with locally made biscuits along with fresh milk, tea and coffee; logs for the wood-burner are on the house.
Spread out in the spacious living room where you’ll find games and books for days when the weather plays up. You can all eat at the farmhouse table in the kitchen or, in summer, light the barbecue in your private garden, which has magnificent views of the Pentland Hills.
Walk along the ridge to the Flotterstone Inn in an hour and a half or drive in ten minutes. The nearest town, Penicuik, has shops and restaurants, and you can take the bus to Edinburgh from here – or drive to the City Bypass in ten minutes.

Our stay at Eastside cottage was excellent and one of the most memorable ones. With beautiful hills to hike at our doorstep, Edinburgh easily accessible, stunning beaches it was an all rounder holiday. But what made it even more special was Susan and her husband's hospitality and warmth. They were always available to answer our questions and give our children special experience of a working farm. The accommodation itself is super comfortable. We would love to return

Byre Cottage is in a wonderful location, surrounded by hills with fantastic walks from the door and yet it is easy to be in central Edinburgh within 15 minutes. The cottage is extremely well-equipped and generously set up. It is beautifully furnished and welcoming. It was pleasure to get away for a few days in this tricky year and to feel so comfortable thanks to the care taken by Susan and Jenny.

Felt like a home away from home as Byre cottage was so welcoming and warm. Had everything we could have wished for and more. Felt like the perfect escape nestled amongst the hills despite actually being quite close to Edinburgh. Loved being able to step out the door and head for the hills, bliss!

Fantastic stay at Eastside Cottages! The cottage was in pristine condition and extremely well equipped, especially in the kitchen. We celebrated New Year whilst there and the weather was pretty good for some stunning walks in the Pentland Hills. The setting was great too - a real escape to the countryside but still close enough to get into Edinburgh easily (we hired a car to make that easily feasible). Lovely hosts too! If going back to Edinburgh I would definitely choose to come back to Eastside! :)

Location
The neighbourhood
Eastside Cottages are set in a quiet glen in Pentland Hills Regional Park, surrounded by hills sporting purple heather – look out for red grouse, peregrines, ravens and badgers. You can strike out for hikes into the hills from the house – take a picnic.
Local points of interest from Susan & Jenny Cowan
- The cottage is set amongst thousands of acres of stunning countryside with walking trails from the doorstep. Picnic in the hills, hike to the local pub or watch wildlife and the world go by from the nearest hilltop. Enjoy the enchanted woodland sauna yurt.
- The cottage is at the centre of Eastside Farm - our working hill sheep farm. Old-fashioned grasses, herbs & heather illustrate the timeless values of our traditional farming systems. Red grouse, peregrines, ravens, wild hares & badgers are a common sight.
- Edinburgh, Scotland's compact, hilly capital city is jam-packed with great things to do and it's only a 10 mile drive from Eastside to the centre! Explore the cobbled streets of George St., Victoria St., Stockbridge, the West End and the Royal Mile.
- The Lothians and beyond have so much to offer. From country spas, sandy beaches and surfing, to distilleries, skiing and sculpture parks. There’s lots to keep the whole family entertained without heading into the city.
- Jupiter Artland is a magical place where you can immerse yourself in sculpture, walking around and sometimes through pieces as you explore the park. With pre-booking you can now swim in an art work with Joana Vasconcelos’ incredible Gateway piece.
- Take a day trip to the coast, Sula boat trips will take you out into the Firth of Forth to spot gannets and puffins. Return to shore picking up fresh lobster and chips at the Lobster Shack open in the North Berwick harbour throughout the summer months.

Introducing
Susan & Jenny Cowan
The farm has been in the Cowan family since the 1850s, Alastair and Susan have been managing the 3,000 acres for many years. Now their daughter Jenny, having studied landscape architecture, is working on a long term wildlife management plan and managing the holiday lets alongside her partner Michael, architect and photographer. They both have a passion for good design.
Eastside Cottages is one of the most magical places one can imagine. The cottages are so lovely and decorated with care that you want to move in permanently. The hills surrounding Eastside are stunning. Just looking at the surroundings and going for walks (right from the doorstep) before cuddling up in front of the fireplace make the perfect vacation for body and soul. Waking up to sheep grazing and meeting the nicest hosts to say good morning - makes it really, really hard to leave!
