The Experience
It’s a mile-long drive down a bumpy farm track (with gates to open and close) but you’re rewarded by a timber-clad cottage for two that blends beautifully into the landscape around it.
Inside is double-height and open plan with large French windows flooding the room with light; throw them open to look out onto the garden and, beyond that, stupendous views of the Pentland Hills. Jenny leaves you locally made biscuits and all the logs you want for the wood-burner.
From here, you can walk the surrounding heather-clad hills and Edinburgh is only ten miles away – regular buses leave from the nearest town, Penicuik, a ten-minute drive away. Get back to fire up the hot tub and watch the stars come out.

Beautiful, rustic accommodation perfect for outdoor lovers and those seeking a retreat from day to day life. You can step right out of the door and into the Pentlands. We loved our time there and left feeling relaxed and refreshed. Would not hesitate to recommend it.

AMAZING PLACE!!!! We recently hired all 4 cottages for a week for our family to stay in when we got married in Edinburgh. The whole experience was amazing and so relaxing after the stress of organising a wedding! Susan goes above and beyond to help you feel comfortable while you stay and made everyone feel so welcome. We used the Woodshed as part of our honeymoon - the wood burning fire and hot tub made the experience so unique and special and we didn’t want to leave at all. You’re not just renting a cottage, you’re getting a great rural experience and I honestly can’t recommend it enough.

Location
The neighbourhood
The cottage is on the opposite side of the glen from the main farmstead. You’re high in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, with stunning views and plenty of walks from your doorstep, but Edinburgh is easily accessible – you're ten miles from Edinburgh City Bypass, and regular buses leave from the nearest town, Penicuik, a ten-minute drive away.
Local points of interest from Susan & Jenny Cowan
- The Woodshed is nestled among acres of stunning countryside crisscrossed with walking trails from the doorstep. Take a picnic into the hills, hike to the local pub or just take a moment to watch the wildlife and the world go by from the nearest hilltop.
- The Woodshed is at the centre of Eastside Farm - our working hill sheep farm. Old-fashioned grasses, herbs & heather illustrate the timeless values of our traditional farming systems. Red grouse, peregrines, ravens, wild hares & badgers are a common sight
- Edinburgh, Scotland's compact, hilly capital city is jam-packed with great things to do and it's only a 10 mile drive from the Woodshed to the centre! Explore the cobbled streets of George St., Victoria St., Stockbridge, the West End and the Royal Mile.
- The Lothians and beyond have so much to offer. From rustic country spas, sandy beaches and surfing, to distilleries, skiing and sculpture parks. For Outlander fans the Woodshed offers the perfect base to chase coasts, castles and golden light!
- Take a day trip to the coast, Sula boat trips will take you out into the Firth of Forth to spot gannets and puffins. Return to shore picking up fresh lobster and chips at the Lobster Shack open in the North Berwick harbour throughout the summer months.
- Book supper at our farming neighbours on the other side of the Pentlands. The Free Company host magical seasonal suppers with all the ingredients grown on their organic farm. Think firepits, old farm buildings and long rustic tables.

Introducing
Susan & Jenny Cowan
The farm has been in the Cowan family since the 1850s, Alastair and Susan have been managing the 3,000 acres for many years. They both have a passion for good design.
Had the most wonderful weekend at the Woodshed, the place is stunning and has a quality finish. The views are breathtaking. Only stayed for 2 nights and it wasn’t enough - will definitely return.
