The Experience

Completed just after WWI for the Shands of Craigellie, this is an elegant house with sash windows, wide wooden doors and high ceilings. Take tea in the large drawing room with comfy sofa and chairs, an open fire, TV, books and games. Eat breakfast at the window: fruits from the farm shop in season, eggs from their hens, porridge, and the full Scottish experience including sausages and black pudding from the local butcher. Or anything you need for a special diet.

A sheltered garden has a handy bench for boots and you’re welcome to relax on the lawns with herbaceous beds, or find a sunny corner to read in. Walk down some steps into the Den of Alyth, an SSSI where the Alyth Burn tumbles through. In 20 minutes you are in the little town or can join longer walks.

Bedrooms in the West Wing are both a good size with duck feather and down duvets and Scottish Fine Soaps in sparkling bathrooms with showers.

Reviews

A wonderful, peaceful weekend with friends at the Craigellie House B&B, Very comfy beds, clean & modern en suite shower room, recently decorated to a high standard throughout. So nice to have our own sitting room with a log burner. Very welcoming hosts who serve a delicious full cooked breakfast. It's a lovely rural location with country walks and a short walk into the little town of Alyth.

Jos, Aberdeen

My second visit to Craigellie, having first discovered it last year and proven as a fabulous destination for a quiet, peaceful and restorative weekend stay. The hosts are amazingly friendly and helpful, and my bedroom and bathroom so clean and comfy. They can provide an evening meal on prior request, and the cooked breakfast was amazing, with individual touches like local honey. A fantastic base from which to explore the area.

Lucy, Edinburgh

Lovely comfortable place to stay. Beautiful house and gardens and very warm welcome. Interesting application of modern biomass heating. Lovely local walk in the Den of Alyth and others nearby.

Allan and Alison, Abingdon

We enjoyed an excellent stay at Craigellie. Liz and Charles were perfect host. The house is beautiful, comfortable and clean. Breakfast and dinner were delicious. From there, we could visit several impressive castles and make nice walks in the countryside.

Miklos, Brussels

We've just had our second stay at Craigellie House, along with our friends and it was as fabulous as our first! The bedrooms are large, beautifully decorated, clean and very comfortable. The breakfasts are excellent and afternoon tea and cake, simply delicious. We opted to have our evening meals provided by our host Liz and they were just as outstanding, as we had remembered from previously. We will definitely be returning again!

Penny, Inverurie

Liz and Charlie were very welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The food was excellent, the room was lovely and tea and cakes every afternoon was a welcome touch. We hope to return.

Brigid, Edinburgh

We have never felt so welcome and relaxed anywhere we have stayed. Wonderful hosts, first rate accommodation and fabulous food. Thank you.

John, Glenfarg

Stayed at Craigellie House with a friend from Germany for a couple of days. The B&B was super, really comfortable. The breakfast was also excellent & Liz was the perfect host. I highly recommend. The are is also lovely to explore.

Flea, Comrie

I cannot recommend Liz and Charles' b&b enough. We can't wait to stay again soon and explore more of the area. Everything was fantastic; the comfortable room, the cosy lounge, the quiet location, the delicious breakfast, and the friendly hosts. Liz and Charles went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Great walking and cycling routes from the door, and pubs and eateries close by. It's the perfect weekend break for those in Edinburgh.

Jonah, Edinburgh

Julia, Inverness

Beautiful Craigellie House with its lovingly furnished and equipped rooms (loved the soap) and their tasteful decoration with all the little details, the excellent breakfast (Kedgeree was my favourite ) and sweet treats in the afternoon and above all Liz and Charles’ warm and attentive nature and valuable travel tips made my stay something very special. My expectations were more than exceeded. Thanks very much!

Liz and Charles are wonderfull people and hosts. They give you a real warm welkom in their beautifull bed and breakfast. The chamber is very luxerous and wide. Great bed(s) and breakfast as you wish. We surely come back again!

Craigellie is the best B&B we have ever stayed in. The accommodation is absolutely beautiful, the food is excellent - home made with good, fresh, healthy ingredients. (You must have the Full Scottish breakfast with the BEST black pudding from a local butcher). The hospitality from Liz and Charles was so welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble, such kind people. Quite frankly don't hesitate to book, you won't go wrong.

Eleanor, East Sussex

A presto, Liz! Guido, Gabriella e Gianfranco

Liz and Charles are excellent hosts. Nothing is too much trouble and their personal touch made all the difference to our holiday. We really enjoyed their hospitality, good home-cooking and tips for things to do in the local area. Craigellie House is homely and stylish, the garden is beautiful. The bedroom and en suite are spotless with attention to detail. The sitting room adds real value. All in all a very special place to get away from it all.

Judith, The Hague, the Netherlands

We found many excellent places in Scottland, but the best was at Craigellie. The house is full of taste but what was best is the kindness and Politessen from Liz and Charly. We fellt like beeing friends.

Heidemarie, Vienna

This is a beautiful place for deep relaxation and personal restoration, well worth it even if you can't stay long. The peace and quiet is exceptional. The hosts are thoughtful and did a great job of making sure we were as comfortable and well-fed as possible. Food is local, fresh and tasty with good choices. The B & B rooms are a little separate from the main part of the house so have a lovely special and private feel, with the added bonus of a separate sitting room that we could use. There is easy access to the Den of Alyth for river walks and wildlife spotting.

Cathy, Edinburgh, UK

We were blown away by the house and garden, it was gorgeous and a work in progress. The bedrooms are comfy with attention to detail, making them welcoming and pleasant. Everything was spotless, all through the house.

Jane, Saturna Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Perfection! A stunning B and B in a beautiful, tranquil setting. The hosts are so personable, positive and well informed. Breakfasts were delicious. Our room was spacious and bright. A great location surrounded with walking trails and a rich history.

Sheilagh, Vancouver

Spectacular home in a lovely setting. Room was beautifully appointed with comfy bed. Great walking trails and interesting historical sites nearby. Will definitely visit again.

Location

The neighbourhood

Explore Alyth with its shops, old bridge, quirky lanes and the river running through it all. There's a nice café where you can sit outside on a sunny day and The Lands of Loyal Hotel for a posh dinner. Join the Cateran Trail, a circular route which takes you through Blairgowrie. Visit Scone Palace, crowning place of Scottish kings or spot ospreys in the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve.

Local points of interest from Liz & Charlie Bushby

  • Craigellie is allegedly the last mansion house built in Scotland. It has huge character and lovely grounds. Guests love the peace and quiet; being in the country; breathing fresh air; listening to birdsong and watching red squirrels playing in the trees.
  • This area is a hidden gem - it's just 90 minutes north of Edinburgh, yet totally rural in a nice sort of way. You still have your home comforts, Wi-fi and plenty to do, but you have fertile farmland, wooded glens and the great outdoors on your doorstep.
  • If walking is your thing then you are spoilt for choice: The Cateran Trail, a 103km circular walk through spectacular countryside, passes just above Craigellie, while the scenic Angus glens and the magnificent Cairngorm mountains are all within easy reach.
  • For golfers there's so much choice: 2 courses in Alyth and 3 championship ones in Blairgowrie. Then there's Forfar, Kirriemuir and Strathmore - and all within 20 miles! Or for cyclists: lazy country lanes; rigorous hills or off-road tracks - take your pick
  • If you prefer castles, palaces and culture you won't be disappointed. Glamis Castle, Scone Palace and Blair Castle are all nearby. In Dundee the new V&A is worth a visit as are RRS Discovery (think Scott & Shackleton) and the McManus Art Gallery.
  • Although not coastal it's easy to get to some super east coast beaches, including St Andrews. Then there are numerous less well-known delights from standing stones and hill forts to local museums and a chance to tour a nearby Scottish tea-growing garden.

Introducing

Liz & Charlie Bushby

Liz and Charlie have set to work proving that it is possible to make an old house more eco-friendly. They have installed solar panels which feed into specialist water cylinders, a log-fired biomass boiler, massive insulation and magnetic secondary glazing, even an EV charger. They now need only 4% of their energy from fossil fuels. They love meeting people and sharing their house with guests.
