The Experience

With separate entrances and a shared outside space these two cottages have all you need to unwind: good crockery, wool duvets and Egyptian cotton on Hypnos beds, splashes of tweed and Highland soaps in gleaming bathrooms. An inter-connecting door can be left open for larger parties.

Admire mountain views, head off into ancient woodland, roam the gardens – the 20 acres are stunning. Sally and David, who do B&B in the main part of the house, are charming and everything here says ‘welcome’; warm yellow ochre walls, happy hens pecking about the orchard, a stove lit in Garden Cottage.

Fresh flowers will be waiting for you and the sun pours in when it shines. Outside spot wild deer, a tawny owl and red squirrels. You’re just 15 minutes from Pitlochry for stocking up or visiting the Festival Theatre. Aberfeldy is 20 minutres for the Watermill Bookshop, art galleries and lovely walks through the Birks.

Reviews

We stayed in Garden Cottage and were totally happy with every aspect of our stay at the property, from the impressive drive up through the trees, to the well - equipped and tasteful interior with great attention to detail of a very high standard. Sally and David were friendly yet unobtrusive hosts and even the red squirrels put in an appearance in the back garden. The peaceful location would be hard to beat yet there is much to see and do within easy driving distance. We would definitely recommend this property without hesitation.

Beautiful accommodation in delightful grounds. The owners Sally and David are most welcoming and their attention to detail ensures a really comfortable and enjoyable stay. Would definitely like to visit again.

Michelle, Ashbourne

This is a wonderful place to stay and the owners have thought of everything to make your stay special. I cannot recommend the accommodation too highly and the situation is very beautiful, with so much bird life, red squirrels and deer it’s an absolute haven. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure both their and your safety at this strange time and we felt so relaxed after our week here. Thank you.

Julie, Sheffield

A wonderful romantic getaway, in the middle of Highland Perthshire: explore by day and relax in the evening, in front of the very cosy wood burning stove, or outside in the garden on long summer evenings. Understated, yet extremely comfortable: perfect!

Red Squirrel Cottage is a little piece of heaven. We couldn't have enjoyed our visit more. Sally and David have a beautiful home and have thought of everything. Beautifully decorated throughout with modern appliances, great wifi and the most comfortable bed ever. Honestly, I wondered if we could fit the mattress in the car to take home! If you want peace and tranquility yet access to a gorgeous part of Scotland, this is the place. We'll be back for the cottage and the squirrels!

Location

The neighbourhood

Come for the peace and quiet in what is known as the 'mini Highlands'. Wonderful green rolling hills surround you so walking, or cycling, is superb. But it's not remote: there are some fabulous gardens and stately homes to visit (Blair Atholl is 25 minutes), much culture in both Pitlochry and Aberfeldy as well as some very good restaurants. You're also near to distilleries for famous whisky.

Local points of interest from Sally Keay & David Royce

  • Visit historic Blair Castle and Gardens, ancient seat of the Dukes of Atholl. Equestrian enthusiasts will love the annual horse trials held in the castle grounds. Go wildlife spotting on a ranger safari or pony trekking in the hills.
  • How about a spot of retail therapy at House of Bruar - our local 'Harrods of the North'. Browse the extensive collections of fine country clothing, sample top quality local produce in the foodhall and enjoy a spot of lunch in the excellent restaurant.
  • Go birdwatching at the Loch of the Lowes Nature Reserve - a spectacular freshwater loch where breeding ospreys nest close to the hide. Combine this with a visit to Historic Dunkeld Cathedral and The Hermitage, a National Trust property.
  • Take a tour of the renowned Edradour Distillery, Scotland's smallest traditional distillery producing fine single malts. If you're feeling energetic, combine this with a quick hike up nearby Ben Vrackie for a great view. We suggest you do the hike first!
  • Enjoy a show at the marvellous Pitlochry Festival Theatre, the 'Theatre in the Hills'. With a different production on each night throughout the summer season, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.
  • Browse the artisan shops and visit the art galleries in nearby Aberfeldy. Enjoy coffee and cake at the award winning Watermill bookshop. Stroll through the famous leafy Birks of Aberfeldy following in the footsteps of poet Robert Burns.

Introducing

Sally Keay & David Royce

David and Sally, nature and animal lovers, live in the main part of this pretty Edwardian house, built as a private residence for the 9th Duke of Atholl. They're dab hands at B&B so are naturally at ease with guests and able to point you to all the best parts of the county. You may bump into one of their dogs or cats when you venture outside.
