The Experience
Traditional Scottish estate accents rub shoulders happily with large Audubon bird prints, French fabrics on curtains and cushions, comfy leather sofas and a cheering wood-burner. Big glass doors allow light to flood in and give green views, so even on dull days you should feel happy here.
The kitchen to the side has all you need to cook up a storm, with plenty of prepping space and a round table for convivial meals. On sunny days you can fling the doors open and head out to a genteel lawn for games or picnics, you’ll find a table and chairs here and the countryside views are pretty.
Two bedrooms (both can be twins) have very comfortable mattresses, good crisp cotton sheets and bathrooms with both baths and marble walk-in showers. Head off for superb walks and cycles, return to the inn for some fabulous food. Their farm-to-plate philosophy and in-house butchery mean there are almost zero food miles and the menus are mouthwatering.

Location
The neighbourhood
In April you can visit Kinclaven Bluebell Wood for a stunning annual display. Gardeners will marvel at the Meikleour Beech Hedge, the tallest in the world and planted in 1746; history lovers can explore neolithic Cleaven Dyke and golfers will head to Blairgowrie. Learn to fly fish on the river Tay (you can book through the owners' website), have a go at clay pigeon shooting, visit Blair Athol, Scone Palace and Glamis Castle.
Local points of interest from Claire Mercer Nairne
- Bring some sensible shoes and enjoy the surroundings. The steps just outside the fence will take you to the Lunan Burn walk: deer, owls, kingfishers and if you quietly approach the water at dusk, you may spot a beaver.
- The excellent Blairgowrie Golf club is less than 5 mins away: 2 championship courses, a 9 hole and a range at your doorsteps. Book through us to benefit from our special prices. If you want a lesson, Dylan is your man, see our website for details.
- Explore the North Wood across the road, a Scot pines forest sliced through by the mysterious Cleaven Dyke, a neolithic earthwork ceremonial site. Ten minutes’ walk away is the Stormont Loch nature reserve.
- Blair Atholl Castle, impressive 13th century family owned castle is definitely worth a visit. Much loved by Queen Victoria who left her marks, it has stunning grounds and gardens. Combine with a shopping spree at House of Bruar, the Harrods of the North.
- Royal visit: head north on the A93, enter the Grampian Mountain, pass Glenshee, the Cairnwell Pass and stop in Braemar. Rub shoulders with A-listers at the beautiful Fife Arms or potter around town. Then head to Balmoral Castle for a visit.
- Visit Scone Palace (10 mins away), the crowning place of Macbeth. Don’t miss the pinetum and the maze and rose garden. Excellent coffee shop for a scone at Scone. Then head to Kinnoull Hill for a spectacular view of Perth (great walk).

Introducing
Claire Mercer Nairne
Sam (Scottish) and Claire (French) are the current Lord and Lady Meikleour. They met whilst working in Singapore; in 2000 Sam inherited the estate from his grandfather and they began to bring the place back to life. Now the farming part of the business is thriving and they have turned their attention to welcoming guests to the coaching inn and cottages.
Nether Gothens Cottage is a sparky, visually attractive space, quite capable of lifting the spirits on dull days. Controlled exuberance delicately stitched into mellow countryside.
