The Experience

Step in to giant Jacobite family portraits, crowds of photographs, delicate egg watercolours from a collector’s Victorian album, lots of comfy seating. The living room is cosy and open plan with a wood-burner for chilly days and a well-equipped kitchen to one side – although the inn is only a couple of miles away so you can have all your meals there if you prefer.

Four traditional country-style bedrooms (two can be twins) are a good size with boldly striped wallpaper, deep mattresses and views – all are en suite. On balmy days you’ll be lounging on the lawn with tables and chairs, views over the countryside, steps to an enchanting burn and the extraordinary 280-year-old 100-foot-high hedge.

Golfers can head to Blairgowrie (four miles), walkers and cyclists can set off from the door through super countryside. Make sure you end up at the inn for a welcome pint and some gorgeous food – their field-to-fork philosophy includes almost zero food miles.

Reviews

After much searching for a suitable place to stay for our family we chose one of the cottages at the well known Meikleour Estate. Wow! We certainly weren't disappointed. The cottage itself was absolutely stunning and we couldn't have asked for a better location. We visited the wonderful hotel/pub (Meikleour Hotel) owned and run by the same people, incredible food and what with golf, walking, and the famous House of Bruar all on the doorstep, my wife and kids were very happy! Can't recommend more!

Christopher, Gatehouse Of Fleet

A sophisticated snuggery with exhuberant, inventive design and plenty to intrigue the eye and mind. An elegant and precocious complement to seductive Perthshire rurality.

Location

The neighbourhood

There's so much to do from here. Learn to fly fish from a pebble beach on the river Tay (you can book through the owners' website), try your hand at clay pigeon shooting or go to Blairgowrie for their magnificent courses. History lovers will head to Scone Palace, Glamis Castle or Blair Atholl; whisky aficionados can visit distilleries, including Dewar's Aberfeldy. The wood behind the inn is a walker's and nature lover's paradise.

Local points of interest from Claire Mercer Nairne

  • Bring some sensible shoes and enjoy the surroundings. The steps just outside the fence will take you to the Lunan Burn walk: deer, owls, kingfishers and if you quietly approach the water at dusk, you may spot a beaver.
  • The excellent Blairgowrie Golf club is less than 5 mins away: 2 championship courses, a 9 hole and a range at your doorsteps. Book through us to benefit from our special prices. If you want a lesson, Dylan is your man, see our website for details.
  • Explore the North Wood across the road, a Scot pines forest sliced through by the mysterious Cleaven Dyke, a neolithic earthwork ceremonial site. Ten minutes’ walk away is the Stormont Loch nature reserve.
  • Blair Atholl Castle, impressive 13th century family owned castle is definitely worth a visit. Much loved by Queen Victoria who left her marks, it has stunning grounds and gardens. Combine with a shopping spree at House of Bruar, the Harrods of the North.
  • Royal visit: head north on the A93, enter the Grampian Mountain, pass Glenshee, the Cairnwell Pass and stop in Braemar. Rub shoulders with A-listers at the beautiful Fife Arms or potter around town. Then head to Balmoral Castle for a visit.
  • Visit Scone Palace (10 mins away), the crowning place of Macbeth. Don’t miss the pinetum and the maze and rose garden. Excellent coffee shop for a scone at Scone. Then head to Kinnoull Hill for a spectacular view of Perth (great walk).

Introducing

Claire Mercer Nairne

Sam (Scottish) and Claire (French) are the current Lord and Lady Meikleour. They met whilst working in Singapore; in 2000 Sam inherited the estate from his grandfather and they began to bring the place back to life. Now the farming part of the business is thriving and they have turned their attention to welcoming guests to the coaching inn and cottages.
