The Experience

Explore the woods with your dog; go salmon fishing with the ghillie. All you hear on these 1,200 acres are birds, otters, wildfowl, and the estate’s bees feasting on gorse on Bemersyde Hill.

The 1535 Peel Tower is the house’s core (younger wings lie either side). There’s more than enough space for a party of 22. Rooms range from two connecting drawing rooms to a clubby study – christened ‘Whites’ by the last earl – to larder and laundry rooms, a huge room with ping-pong and pool, and much, much more.

Sizzle up sausages down by the river as the sun goes down – there are dark skies for gazers. Book a table for a fine meal in Melrose. This scenic Borders town is five miles away and Burt’s welcomes all. Return to log-burners in grand fireplaces (every room has one), books and beams, and a magnificent, winding stone stair.

Reviews

I loved the acres of gardens and grounds that are full of wildflowers and picnicking spots. I felt like I was stepping back in time when entering the estate - there is so much history!

Max, Wilts

A thoroughly enjoyable stay in a house full of history and character, not to mention the fascinating art collection. Margaret’s cornucopic vegetable garden was a huge feature of our stay, and she was both accommodating and readily available when needed. Last but not least, Ada’s breakfasts were sumptuous and are highly recommended!

Location

The neighbourhood

The landscape is the rolling Scottish Borders, with wonderful views to the Eildon Hills. Discover the tennis court, the woodland play area, and the greenhouse where peaches flourish. The Tweed is a short walk through the woods; consider casting lessons from Ian, estate ghillie for 30 years. St Boswell’s is the closest place to eat (three miles), while Melrose has shops, restaurants, and two National Trust gardens to visit. Walking routes abound.

Introducing

The Team at Bemersyde

Bemersyde has been the home of the Haigs for 800 years; notable ancestors include Field Marshal Haig. The present Earl and his wife inherited in 2010. Margaret, who occupies the lodge and has looked after the house for 30 years, meets, greets and is also available to bake - and makes delicious cheese scones!
