The Experience

Love and care have been lavished on this bolthole with plenty of attention given to the little details: homemade bread and other breakfast goodies, games, cookery books, an iPod full of tunes. Cook a delicious meal in the neat kitchen, throw some logs on the fire, and take a long soak in the bedroom roll top tub.

You’re in a small, thriving village with a community shop and a twice-weekly pop up café in the village hall – perfect for a slice of homemade cake after a long ramble. The walking all around is fantastic: hop on the Pennine Way; hike the craggy hillsides, forests and heather-strewn fields of St Cuthbert’s Way and the Cheviots that pass through Northumberland National Park; visit the market town of Kelso on the banks of the river Tweed.

With your own entrance, up a small lane, you’ll feel nicely private. Sip your coffee in the outdoor seating spot to plan your day: perhaps a trip to Holy Island then back for a pint in one of two pubs.

A wonderful spot from which to stride out upon on glorious walks for miles - use The Hayloft as a stop on St Cuthbert's Way to Holy Island, at the end of The Pennine Way or for rambling through the Northumberland National Park - you are spoilt for choice here and this place is a lovely haven for two. Steve and Jane have thought of everything to make a stay here as special as possible.

The Hayloft is the most idyllic place to stay. Set in a tranquil and stunning location in the Borders, the Hayloft itself wants for nothing. The attention to detail and gorgeous interior makes a stay at the Hayloft a complete delight and treat. Steve and Jane are wonderful hosts - attentive and thoughtful whilst leaving you to relax and unwind. Really helpful walking maps of the local area were a huge hit. Will definitely return for more rural detoxing.

We had a wonderful two night stay at this newly refurbished hayloft. The accommodation had everything and more that you require for your stay. It is situated in a lovely friendly village with a pub just yards away and for away days you are less than an hour away from the stunning Northumberland coastline and its many castles and about an hour and half to Edinburgh. Though we did not do any walks the surrounding countryside is spectacular. Highly recommend.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village is peaceful and has a real sense of community, you can nip to the pub for a drink or the shop for supplies without getting in the car. You're just over the border from Northumberland National Park (40-minutes on foot to reach it), home to the stunning Cheviots hill range, clear rivers, endless forests and some of the finest dark skies in Europe. You've easy access to the Pennine Way, St Cuthbert's Way, and the coast is under an hour.

Local points of interest from Steve & Jane Mitchell

  • Head out on St Cuthbert's Way through the village and up to the National Park - it weaves through forest, meadows, over hills to the little town of Wooler, then over to Lindisfarne. Start in Melrose and be with us at the end of the 2nd day.
  • Kelso is a sweet little market town, about a 15-minute drive (or bus ride) away, for cafés, delis, independents, bakeries, pubs, lovely shops and the beautiful Tweed River meandering through. Watch the world go by with a homemade gelato on the square...
  • Bamburgh is a pretty little village on the coast, set around the cricket green, and famous for the magnificent castle - only a 50-min drive away. Lindisfarne is also a must-see on Holy Island - the walled Gertrude Jekyll garden is wonderful.
  • For a sandy day out head to Coldingham, about 50 mins by car - a beautiful little sandy bay on the east coast. Or a little further north and you'll reach Edinburgh - there's a brilliant antiques place at Drum Farm just south of the city.
  • Yetholm is home to 2 pubs - The Border (in Kirk Yetholm) and The Plough (opposite), each with a sunny terrace looking out onto the village greens. Lovely for a crisp local ale after striding through the hills.
  • Floors Castle in Kelso - the largest inhabited house in Scotland - is a gorgeous day out. Wander around their walled gardens, through the woodlands, hop on the cycle trail. Or visit the delightful the Monteviot House & Gardens, a 25-min drive away.

Introducing

Steve & Jane Mitchell

In 2021, after their three daughters had flown the nest, Steve and Jane moved from Shropshire to the Borders. They happened upon Kelso as part of their search and fell in love with the area. Their home, Swan House, was a hotel until the 80s and The Hayloft was originally a stables. They've worked hard restoring the place: sourcing handmade tiles, filling it with art, hand sewing cushions and more.
