The Experience
The steeply wooded Conwy valley snakes down to this stone and slate property set back and above the road in the National Park, and the walks are wonderful. Stride to the village, or to Conwy Falls or simply stroll down to the river to cool your feet on a hot day. You arrive to homemade cakes and a cup of tea which you can take in the sitting room by a warming wood-burner.
Inside has an upbeat traditional feel with polished antiques and many pictures by the Betws-y-coed Victorian artists who once lived here. Bedrooms are colourful and comfortable and one of the bathrooms comes with a double-ended roll top tub and views of Lledr Valley. Wake to porridge, a full Welsh breakfast with homemade hash browns, soda bread, haddock or a vegetarian option. Vegans can ask for special sausages made in the village.
Above all you’ll know you’re in Wales. Your hosts’ enthusiasm for this glorious part of the world is infectious, so do explore!

We felt very welcome and comfortable, and especially enjoyed the generous breakfasts. Everything was immaculately clean. It was an easy walk via footpaths and an old road by the river into town. Highly recommended!

We received a warm welcome from Gwawr and Ian as we arrived. Pengwern is a charming guest house with off road parking and the use of a lounge as well as our own room; everything was impecably clean. Prior to our arrival we had been sent some very useful information sheets regarding where to eat and visit during our stay. Our breakfasts were cooked exactly as we asked and there was no shotage of food. We very much hope to return in the near future.

We felt very welcome, able to relax in this lovely home and our hosts were always ready to help with anything we needed. A peaceful place, surrounded by trees and the valley beyond. Our room was carefully and tastefully decorated and very comfortable. A beautiful walk along the river to the main town. We would very happily stay again.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's 1.5 miles to Betws-y-coed for a good choice of places to eat, many outdoorsy shops and a railway station. Drive 20 minutes to tackle Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) but there are also castles, road and mountain cycling, underground adventures, wildlife, waterfalls and fascinating art and history. Llandudno is a 40-minute drive for a stunning beach and on summer Sundays you can be lifted by the Welsh choir performing in the church.

Introducing
Gwawr & Ian Mowatt
Welsh is Gwawr's first language so she'll happily tell you how to pronounce her name! Both she (who loves nature and paints as a hobby) and Ian (an experienced mountain walker) are from the area. They love their guests to enjoy a taste of the real Welsh experience. They know climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is a captivating draw but they also know there is much, much more to enjoy in this beautiful countryside.
Sue and I had a very pleasant stay at Pengwen Country House and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting North Wales. It is an ideal location for Snowdonia, the surrounding coast and the many castles and other places of interests. It is ideal for walkers of all levels and the countryside is beautiful. Gwawr & Ian are great hosts with great local recommendations to follow up on. The breakfast choice is magnificent and really sets you up for the day. We will definitely return to discover more of area in the near future. Gary & Sue
