The Experience

A grand yet wonderfully relaxed and friendly country house on the Welsh borders. Overlooking a lake and first mentioned in 1465, Tower has been in John’s family for hundreds of years, and he is more than happy to share his knowledge on its extensive, fascinating history. Breakfast is served at one long polished table in the impressive dining room, bedrooms are elegant with high ceilings, antiques, portraits and masses of space; the garden is perfect for a stroll. Head out to historic Chester, climb Snowdon or explore lively Mold with its umpteen places to eat. Return to relax by the fire in the drawing room.

Reviews

I had a great stay at Tower, breakfasts were lovely and the room was big and comfortable. The location is perfect for exploring the beautiful Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, we had a great day out in Llangollen and also visited Chester. Thank you John and Steph for welcoming me.

Roella, Bristol

We had absolutely perfect stay here. The house and the whole grounds are stunning and spotless. Host was excellent and breakfast super tasty. It was our wedding night and we will be coming back every year for our anniversary. I love that place 🩷

Veronika, Buckley

Delightful place lovingly cared for by friendly and helpful owners! The bedroom was large and airy with a lovely view of the grounds; it was equipped with a microwave as well as the usual television, kettle, tea, coffee, etc. There was a large comfortable lounge area and interesting grounds to stroll in. An excellent breakfast was served with plenty of options including lovely bread and freshly cooked items. At £100, I thought it was very reasonably priced.

We booked very last minute, were warmly welcomed by the owner, Steph, and had a quiet room, absolutely full of antiques. The house is unique, beautiful, with lovely grounds. A very good breakfast was served too. Another thing to mention, we were given fresh milk to put into the little room fridge, a variety of teas, coffees, biscuits too. Very welcome after a long drive.

My wife and I have just returned from a three night stay at Tower. We were warmly welcomed by John who could tell us all about his beautiful family home and his ancestors' connection with it over the last five centuries. It is a splendid building with a fifteenth century tower complete with battlements. All rooms are decorated with pictures and artefacts going back through John's family's time there. Rooms, grounds, breakfast and John's easy manner were all first class. We will certainly return.

Philip, Settle

We stayed at this this wonderful location in celebration of my fathers 80th birthday. John and his family were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. I had pre-arranged a 4 course meal which was outstanding in every way. John was so attentive and he was an absolute gentleman. The location is truly stunning and beautifully presented. I would love to have stayed longer and have a better look at all the historic artefacts. Thank you so much. Brilliant.

This is a beautifully quirky castle style B&B hidden away in the stunning Mold countryside. John, the owner (it’s been in his family since the 1500s) couldn’t do enough to help - let us check in early so we could change for a wedding and then organised a cab to collect us later! Huge room, new bathroom, great welcome tray and wonderful breakfast the next day (best porridge my husband’s had in years). If you’re a clean freak like me, you’ll appreciate that it’s spotless throughout (Jean, the housekeeper, even polishes the brass radiator heads!). Highly recommended.

Local points of interest from John Wynne-Eyton

  • The city of Chester is a short drive . In the old city, the Rows consist of covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timber buildings which house an extensive variety of tempting shops and pubs. Falconry displays can be seen in the cathedral grounds.
  • Mold itself hosts events throughout the year including a real ale trail (bus provided), food and drink festival , novemberfest, soul and blues festival, . Theatre Clwyd offers a wide programme of performing arts, film and community events.
  • The Vale of Clwyd is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and provides a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities. Moel Famau is the local mountain to conquer. Nercwys forest nearby has short or longer walks and mountain bike tracks.
  • Loggerheads country park offers walks that incorporate the splendour of nature and the interest of historic endeavour. Finish off at Café Florence for tasty treats.
  • The area inspires visual arts. Helfa Gelf – Wales’ Art Trail allows you to visit local studios at certain times of the year. Ruthin and Afonwen craft centres are both popular. Summer Clay Art in Denbigh is a must for anyone interested in ceramics.
  • Other attractions include - Chester Zoo – as featured in the ‘secret life of the zoo’, Llangollen, Erddig and for longer days out Snowdonia, the Lleyn peninsula and the beautiful North Wales coast with numerous heritage sites and castles.
