The Experience

You approach from the back, down the bumpy track, over the cattle grid… but the glory of this handsome villa is the front and the view. Overlooking the Dwyryd estuary and rolling Welsh hills you’re a ten-minute wander into the Italianate fantasy village of Portmeirion where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and a deserted beach.

The estate is covered in subtropical woodlands and the house’s terraced gardens, part-overrun, are heaven for children to hide-and-seek in. Adults have long lawns and a barbecue for al fresco dining. Inside is comfortable: Edwardian windows and polished oak floors, wood-burners in fireplaces, book-filled shelves. Toys, games and DVDs invite children to settle in, there’s a panelled library with an open fire and calming bedrooms. The master room opens onto a balcony with views over the estuary.

A generous hamper filled with lovely local stuff waits in the kitchen. The best of North Wales is at your feet: Black Rock Sands beach is a 15-minute drive, Porthmadog a 20-minute stroll, Snowdonia not much further.

The terraced garden would be a joy to sit in with its views across the estuary to the mountains.The thought of being lucky enough to spot an osprey could keep me there for hours. Then, to be able to walk back through the french windows into the cosy and welcoming sitting room or Library, would be a perfect way to unwind. Home from home, but in an Edwardian style with a warm, contemporary twist.

When I found this house online - I suspected that I had found a gem, my expecations were exceeded... Hafod Cae Maen is unbeatable - perfect for a group with kids! Stylish, authentic full of character with Quirky art work oozing personality dotted around the walls. If you are looking to explore N Wales - this home is the perfect base. However, I could equally have stayed hanging out there all day. The sunrises and sunsets are out of this world - clean, cosy and dreamy... When can I return?!

A Magical home on a Welsh mountain of dreams.... When I found this house online - I suspected that I had found a gem, my expectations were exceeded... When can I return!!?? For a group of 8 (with kids) Hafod Cae Maen is truly unbeatable - lots of space, with 2 upstairs bathrooms and a balcony from the main bedroom to escape out on to! ....We stayed in springtime, which was bliss - but would love to come back in Winter with the roaring fires, Summer with the 360 degrees of sun spilling in through the windows - or autumn with all the colours...

Location

The neighbourhood

Set on its own peninsula reaching into the estuary, this fantastical collection of colourful buildings with an Italian influence was masterminded by Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Today the buildings are all heritage listed and the site is a conservation area. There are stretches of quiet sandy beaches to discover, Porthmadog has a popular indoor swimming centre and Snowdonia is close.

Local points of interest from Paul de Thierry

  • A ten minute walk through woods to Portmeirion village. A truly unique place where there is plenty to look at and lovely woodland walks. Also two good restaurants and a fantastic ice-cream shop!
  • Take a picnic and walk through the sub-tropical woodlands of Portmeirion to a deserted beach.
  • Beddgelert, Harlech and Capel Curig are within easy reach and wonderful places to visit
  • Boston Lodge halt for the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland narrow-gauge steam railways is ten minutes by footpath. Steam enthusiasts can also book to go on Snowdon Mountain Railway.
  • Ideal base for walking in the Snowdonia National Park and visiting stunning local beaches including Harlech and Morfa Nevyn.
  • Adrenaline junkies can experience an extreme zip wire ride or bounce on a gigantic underground trampoline at Llechwedd Slate Caverns while their non-adrenaline junkie friends visit the historic slate mines!
