The Experience

The name Chickenshed doesn’t suggest award-winnning architecture, which makes arriving at the red cedar, glass and stainless steel structure that won a 2017 RIBA all the more amazing. Put your shoes in the boot room and pad barefoot across the heated polished concrete floor. Owner Sue will show you round and explain how some of the space-age kitchen gadgets work. This is the place to truly enjoy cooking a feast (though be prepared to look at your own kitchen with a touch of disappointment when you return home!).

The floor to ceiling glass across the expansive open plan living area creates a constant dramatic connection to the beautiful Wye Valley. It’s all very impressive, but homely too. The cabin’s agricultural roots, like the corrugated roof, and chunky wooden cladding, are kept soft and modern with striking greens, asymmetrical windows, and lights which appear to the float around the glulam beams.

Outside there are two private acres where the kids, big or small, can play safely, and a wood to wander through and gaze up at canopies of ancient trees. When you’re sitting around the crackling flames of fire pit on the paved terrace with the bats flapping above, and some sizzling steaks cooking – you’ll see you don’t have to do much to make days or evenings here perfectly atmospheric.

Absolutely beautiful! The Chickenshed was stunning!! Exactly as shown on the website. The host was SO lovely, accommodating, kind and very informative.. The place was super clean and the host provided so much information which was a huge help. The views were stunning!! It’s in the middle of nowhere and was just bliss!!! Absolutely precious place to stay. Thank you! 100% we shall be back!

Sally, Bristol

What a wonderful place and the best Welsh cakes you're likely to taste! Sue went out of her way to accommodate us. I would highly recommend The Chickenshed, whether it's for some well-deserved relaxation or as a base for exploration - or a bit of both. Enjoy the fire pit as you look out over the fields - I definitely hope to be back.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sue Peacock

  • Set on the Trellech plateau in the glorious Wye Valley, the Chickenshed is a great base for walkers. Walk from the door or head into the woods and onto the Wye Valley walk, join Offa's dyke path from Tintern or head to the nearby Black Mountains.
  • Great choice of nearby pubs and restaurants, from the newly refubished Royal George in Tintern, to the Michelin starred The Whitebrook just up the road. Or walk along the lanes to the locals - The Lion in Trellech or The Fountain in the other direction.
  • The Silver Circle Distillery produces handmade craft spirits as well as hosting experiences such as "Distill your own gin" and Orchard Kitchen's street food Fridays. Also on Kate Humble's farm is the fabulous Pig and Apple burger bar - book well ahead.
  • Visit nearby Chepstow Castle - perched high above the River Wye like a history lesson in stone or TIntern Abbey still standing in roofless splendour on the banks of the Wye nearly 500 years since its fall from grace
  • Rent bikes for all ages at Pedal a bike away to enjoy the range of trails in the Forest of Dean, or bring your own bikes and enjoy lots of good quite routes in the Wye Valley. Stop off with at the Filling Station cafe in Tintern before heading home.
  • Book a canoe from Monmouth Canoe Centre or Wye Canoes at Symonds Yat and head out onto the river. Take a picnic or finish off with lunch at the Saracens Head or the Boat Inn.
