The Experience

Val runs an art gallery on the ground floor of her 17th-century house and has filled the apartment above it with beautiful pieces of art (some that you can buy) and carefully chosen furniture. She’s very much a local and will give you useful tips about walks and where to eat.

Observe the bustling streets from your perch on a window seat in the massive living room, cook in the sweet little kitchen – there’s an excellent deli selling local produce two doors down – or find restaurants and pubs on your doorstep.

The town is very walkable and for getting out, the river is lovely. Walk, wild swim or cycle in the moody Black Mountains, return to much comfort and good books.

Location

The neighbourhood

Hay is a honeypot of culture far from any city, with plenty of bookshops, delis and good places to eat – all independent. You can walk to everything once here, including canoe hire on the Wye. Just outside the town are fabulous walks in the hills and some seriously challenging cycling routes. There are dramatic and remote landscapes with wild swimming and waterfalls in the Black Mountains – make sure to climb Lord Hereford’s Knob for the views from the top. While the annual literary festival has made the town famous, it's lovely during quieter periods too.

Local points of interest from Val Harris

  • Do bring your walking boots and from the front door walk north or south along Offa’s Dyke Path, east or west along the Wye Valley Walk or venture further afield into the Brecon Beacons and climb Pen y Fan, the largest mountain in South Wales (886m)
  • For the foodies we have The Felin Fach Griffin and Daphne's in Presteigne which are both worth a visit!
  • For art lovers, my contemporary art gallery, The Table, has regularly changing exhibitions and you will find artworks for sale both downstairs and upstairs. The Haymakers and the Lion Street Gallery also add to the art scene.
  • This Town of Books does not disappoint boasting over thirty book shops and the Atelier is next door to the largest, Richard Booths Bookshop. What you will find in Hay are independent shop keepers proud of their product and happy to tell you so!
  • The River Wye borders this ancient Marches town and offers something for everyone: canoeing, kayaking, fishing, paddling, skimming stones and for the intrepid and young at heart the must-do wild swimming Wim Hof style!
  • The Atelier is a sanctuary of calm and a perfect retreat space.

Introducing

Val Harris

Val is marvellous and bubbles over with enthusiasm for life and Hay, where she first lived at 18 and has now been based for the past ten years. She worked in the film industry for 20 years and then ran an art gallery in Surrey; she also had a house in France and gravitated back to Hay as it was the closest to French living she could find. Her gallery is a single ground-floor room beneath the atelier where there’s always heaps going on and wonderful art exhibitions. Val is also a keen walker and can point you in the right direction.
