The Experience

Swap the city for the Cambrian mountains of mid-Wales, beautiful even through the rain. 81 acres of a successful rewilding project surround you, hares and rare butterflies inhabit the valley, and red kites circle majestically above.

Light floods in to a fresh backdrop of high beams and white plaster, sheep wool fills the walls, ground-source pumps heat floors, and the panorama unfolds with the weather. What with LED mood lights and a contemporary log-burner, upstairs is irresistible, and so is the entertainment: a pool table, a drop-down screen for films, and Ruark surround sound. Get cosy upstairs at the communal elm table furnished with chapel pews, sleep downstairs in opulent beds.

Peace reigns, buzzards nest, and the rough and ready garden blends into the countryside. Gather round the barbecue, listen to the birds, feed the wild piglets. There are glamping pods and tents too.

Reviews

Our only problem with the Red Kite Barn was that we didn't want to leave! A truly magical escape. From the freshest drinking water and air to the morning visits from the wild ponies. Would highly recommend the hot tub. Watch the Red Kite's fly above you by day and then star gaze at night. Once back inside, we played pool and watched films on the big screen. There was something for each member of the family. We took breath taking walks around the estate and fed the pigs daily. And being off grid only adds to this wonderful woodland retreat. We'll go back one day - til then we'll day dream.

Complete bliss! This property was amazing. It is very remote but that's the best thing about it! There was no mobile signal, the property is comfortable and well appointed and the kids were so excited to feed the pigs each day! The bedrooms were very comfortable, and pitch black with the shutters closed, the upstairs living/dining/kitchen area was great. Pool table and projector/movies were great for all the family. The decked area was great but the furniture could do with updating. The walks around the estate and in the local area were great and it was too far to the local towns.

Brian, Worcestershire

This place was out of this world! Everything was unique and like nowhere we have visited before. The little touches to each room were creative and we especially liked the projector to watch movies on! Would definitely go again and would recommend to anyone

Recently, we enjoyed a magical break at Red Kite Barn, exploring the Welsh landscape, looking at the breath-taking Moon and Earth Conkers, observing the pigs at ‘Hogwarts’ and enjoying the freedom of being ‘in the now.’ The superfast Wi-Fi was completely unexpected and enabled us to consider a longer stay in the future. We stayed for a weekend, yet felt completely rejuvenated. Imagine the feeling after a week! David and Anjana have created an iconic haven - a retreat with a modern, stylish twist. Time stops here and we will be counting the days until we can return!

As a weekend away for my 40th Birthday I really couldn't of asked for a better venue. The Red Kite Barn offered an escape from everyday life and gave beautiful peaceful views with lots of wildlife to see. With clear frosty evenings in the hot tub with a few drinks to evenings with music, a game of pool and watching movies on the huge projector screen, we didn't need to venture out much at all, except for visiting Hogwarts, the on site Pigs, and walks around the site. Gigrin Farm is also a must visit to watch the wild kites being fed and only 10 minutes away. I didn't want to leave.

We recently stayed at Red Kite Barn for a few nights and absolutely loved everything about it! The barn itself had everything you could want (plus amazing extras like the cinema screen and projector) and we loved exploring the surrounding land; feeding the pigs on a couple of mornings and watching the breathtaking dark skies at night. Neither of us had ever seen so many stars in such detail. P.S. if snow is forecast and you don’t have a 4 WD best to check with Anjana if you can get up the drive ok.

Denholme, Southport

Well what can we say a stunning barn and location with everything you could possibly need just added to by a covering of snow. We’d love to keep this place to ourselves but the owners really do have a very unique place here that they are so willing to share. Matt,Claire and Saffie the spaniel. December 22

Red kite Barn and Childerness Estate is one of the most amazing places to stay. The Barn is super comfortable and spacious , open plan with windows to the most beautiful scenery. The barn is well stocked with everything you may need, from logs, to literature and if your a keen cook, then you will love cooking here ! A fabulous screen protector that comes down from the ceiling and a great section of movies . A remote setting so peaceful, your worries just melt away. The surrounding estates is full of walks and wildlife, shopping, eating and more walks a short drive . cant wait to go back !

Laura, Tenterden, Kent

I am a seeker of peace and inspiration, and here I found both in abundance. It is not just that the barn itself is so beautifully and thoughtfully converted into a luxurious, ecological retreat, but that it is set in woodlands of such gentle harmony with nature. One feels relaxed within moments. I cannot recommend this retreat enough, for the individual creative, family, couple, or small group seeking calm, inspiration and renewed being.

Kathryn, Bath

“Miles away from civilisation , if I could bottle the calm and relaxation I felt on this holiday I would take a sip everyday when back in the rat race that is work. Best bits… the view , atmosphere, the bath, the shower, the cinema, red kites flying overhead, bird watching , the hare that chose to hop up on and feed right outside the gable window, loud jays, screeching owls [ that frightened us to bits] bleating sheep. Sunrise, sunset, the moon and stars. I have never slept better

Anne and Paul, Dudley

So peaceful, relaxing and everything in between. Red Kite Barn had it all! We went out most days and recommend checking out Elan Valley, Brecon and Worm’s Head at Rhossili Bay – all worth a visit. And for the evenings in, you must check out the cinema screen/projector, it’s amazing. Big hit with us being film buffs.

Jamie, Tracy and Stanley

I chose Red Kite Barn because my husband is a Grand Designs and an Amazing spaces fan and I knew it would be really good. It lived up to expectations with Red Kites flying overhead on arrival. The design and finish of the barn is exceptional and we particularly loved the glass sides of the upstairs living room where we could sit and look out across the hills. This is an off the beaten track property and the surrounding countryside is stunning.

Location

The neighbourhood

The barn is utterly secluded, surrounded by 80 acres of conservation woodland. Wallow in the peace or make as much noise as you like. The closest shops are in Newbridge, 3 miles, and Llandridnod and Builth Wells are nearby for essentials. Rhayder has some good pubs and shops for browsing.

Local points of interest from Anjana Devoy

  • Fantastic location for spotting birds of prey and indeed the namesake of the estate - the Red Kites! You are surrounded by 80 acres of private estate. Squirrels, sheep and rare flora are abundant! We have an app which has loads of information available.
  • Pen-doll Rocks, Builth Wells: a lovely stretch of the Wye just outside Builth Wells with a variety of flat rocks and wooden planks that connect them and fairly easy access to the water. and a cliff that the fearless jump from. Approx.7 miles from the barn.
  • Borth, just north of Aberystwyth on Wales’ western shoreline, has great sand dunes to explore, with beach and water on each side. Park on Beach and enjoy the Dyfi nature reserve, ice cream van to and watch the kite surfers!
  • Strata Florida and it’s magnificent arch and ruins; all that remains of a grand monastery from medieval times. Take the scenic route back over the mountain road, taking in the abandoned lead mines and Elan Valley Reservoirs. Beautiful drive.
  • Turning right out of the estate will take you to the largest area of high moorland in England and Wales, and you can go in any direction you like. Plan on taking a compass and some good walking shoes.
  • If you are in the mood for more culture, check out Willow Globe, south of Rhayader. It is a wonderfully quirky mini- Globe made from planter willow trees, and beautifully intimate. It has a varied programme of Shakespeare plays and visiting companie
