The Experience

Step through the courtyard of the main house to your own wing with a bright and cosy upstairs sitting room – underfloor heating keeps you warm on the chilliest days – a big open-plan kitchen and a chunky farmhouse table for memorable meals.

Children will adore the winding wooden stairs, corridors and landings – just the ticket for hide and seek, while grown ups will enjoy the space. Bedrooms, two on the first floor and four on the second, are bright with lovely views – they share three simple bathrooms with an extra loo downstairs. On balmy days you’ll be outside – the estate is rooted in regeneration, so you’ll spot much nature, including kingfishers and otters.

Eat al fresco or have a barbecue on your private terrace, light the firepit and on clear nights you’ll be stargazing. This is a fabulous, unfussy place with a small farm shop selling homegrown organic treats from veg to beef. Walks in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park will be sublime.

Reviews

Penpont really is the Brecon Beacons' best kept secret. Beyond the historic and characterful charm of the house and Courtyard Wing, the gardens and grounds are a joy to explore. From the ancient woodlands to the famous Greenman Maze, the estate is a haven for wildlife. Dip in the river, soak up the sauna or feast from the farm shop. There is something very special about this place.

We had just the best time at Penpont! Such a beautiful estate, with huge and glorious grounds set in fantastic Brecon countryside. The accommodation in the Courtyard Wing was really comfortable, with big bedrooms and bathrooms, and communal kitchen and living room. Owners Vina and Gavin are most welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our evening sauna and dip in the River Usk! None of us wanted to leave...We can't recommend Penpont highly enough.

Location

The neighbourhood

Hike, cycle, canoe and climb in the stunning National Park – you'll find wonderful waterfalls and glorious views from the peaks. You're just 10 minutes from Brecon, a bustling market town with interesting shops, a jazz festival and a magnificent cathedral. Hay-on-Wye is half an hour. The Felin Fach Griffin serves excellent food, as does The International Welsh Rarebit Centre which you can walk to.

Local points of interest from Vina & Gavin Hogg

  • A mile long stretch of fly-fishing starting in the garden. The Usk is famous for its wild spring trout, and this beat is one of the most sought after in the country. Fly only, catch and release, day tickets available from the house. Bring your own gear.
  • Penpont, a Grade I listed house, and sits amongst a historic range of listed buildings, the archetypal home farm. The Stables was converted 10 years ago and has a large rooms available for meetings, conferences, retreats, weddings and parties.
  • Just three miles from Brecon Beacons National Park Mountain Centre - walk from the house and disappear into the high country, we can guide you with maps and make suggestions to suit your needs. You can access the entire National Park from Penpont.
  • We are passionate about the environment, we heat all the buildings with a large Biomass boiler with wood sourced from the estate woods. We have created an educational tree trail to guide you around the gardens and the trees of interest, veterans and new.
  • We grow organic veg and fruit within the walled gardens, we open a small farm shop selling our produce from June to December, as well as delivering to local restaurants. Contact us if you would like a box of veg on your arrival, or to take home with you.
  • Pony trekking, kayaking, Mountain biking are all within easy reach. Explore the delights of Hay on Wye, the market town of Brecon, further afield is the Gower for surf, and the Elan Valley for pure wilderness. There are still places to escape to

Introducing

Vina & Gavin Hogg

The house has been in the same family for over 350 years. For three decades Davina and Gavin have dedicated themselves to the preservation and revival of the family estate. Along with their sons, Josh and Forrest, they continue to protect Penpont's future through a series of sustainable businesses and conservation projects. In 2022 they were the proud winners of the Historic Houses sustainability awards. They are very friendly and approachable too!
