The Experience

What joy to arrive here: red kites soar overhead, sheep bleat in the bracken and the brook shoots past you – heaven for dipping walk-weary feet on a summer evening. Inside is very comfortable, rustic and pretty, with painted stone walls, lovely old flagstones and a merry wood-burner for chilly evenings. You’ll find plenty of board games, books and a TV if you’re stuck indoors.

There’s room in the kitchen for four to cook together, enough prepping space and all the pots and pans you need. You’re left basics in the cupboards, plus apple juice and Welsh waffles to start you off. Bedrooms (two downstairs sharing a bathroom and one up with its own) have glorious views, fine linen and throws, deep mattresses.

A track leads into the mountains for wonderful walks and delicious infusions of the freshest air. Come back to wallow in the wood-fired hot tub, play a game of table tennis or pool, light the barbecue and watch the stars appear.

We think you'll love

  • The lure of all that nature – however cosy it is inside you'll feel a huge itch to enjoy it all from outside. Watch the weather blast in over the hills and feel renewed
  • Climbing Hay Bluff or Lord Hereford's Knob – the views from the top are simply beautiful and you can see for miles
  • Spending long summer evenings by the firepit, ruminating and chatting, making holiday memories

You should know

  • The track up is quite steep and a tad bumpy so take it slowly – the views are worth it
  • This isn't a modern, sleek property – it's full of character and history, and perhaps the odd cobweb and uneven floor

Reviews

If you hear a call to the wild, then here is the response. A place of raw beauty that is all yours to enjoy. If you bring enough supplies you’d never need to leave, just spend your days roaming the mountains. But if you do feel the need for some town time then Hay-on-Wye fits the bill perfectly, packed with interest – especially of the bookish kind – and galleries, shops and cafés. Come, recharge.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walks from the door are the order of the day – the hills beckon, but less hearty souls could stay indoors happily, or have a leisurely picnic by the brook. Hay-on-Wye, the Border gem, is just a 12-minute drive for stocking up from good shops, an excellent butcher and pubs, as well as more books than you'll see anywhere. Head to the Bull's Head at Craswall for excellent food, or to the river Wye.

Local points of interest from Huw Evans-Bevan

  • Kate the Baker - freshly made artisan batch baker, Thursdays and Saturdays only, from a hidden ex-workshop in the back streets of Hay-on-Wye. Talgarth Mill - restored water mill still producing bread flour with excellent bakery and artisan café/bistro.
  • The Warren is a secret swimming spot!
  • The Bull's Head in Craswall - excellent Michelin acknowledged menu, full of character and very friendly team.
  • The Brecon Beacons National Park & the Black Mountains.
  • The river Wye & Llangors lake. Wye Valley Canoes in Glasbury offers great canoe hires.
  • Llanthony Priory and cellar bar. A stunning drive (or walk!) from the cottage along the Gospel Pass to this beautiful ruined abbey.
