The Experience

Rough-painted stone walls and oak beams give a delightfully rustic feel, while interesting furniture, a roaring fire and an abundance of good art make you feel happy to be indoors whatever the weather is playing at. You’ll find games, books and a TV with all the channels, but mostly you’ll want to be outdoors, taking in huge gulps of fresh air, walking in the grandeur of nature.

The gorgeous old table in the kitchen is a grand spot for cooking together happily and then gazing through the picture window at the mountains. You’re left the basics for cooking and milk, eggs, apple juice etc. so you needn’t bring the lot. When you need to stock up, Hay-on-Wye is a short drive.

You should sleep peacefully to the sound of the brook and the sheep – bedrooms have views. Tackle Hay Bluff then return to a wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit and a barbecue for long summer evenings, or a snuggle by the fireside. Either way it’s lovely here.

We think you'll love

  • The feeling of being so far away from city cares, cars, bustle, noise and maddening distractions
  • Walks and climbs in the National Park – the views from the top of Hay Bluff and Lord Hereford's Knob are like a scene from Lord of the Rings – spectacular
  • Spending a day in Hay-on-Wye, buying books and good food to bring home

You should know

  • The road up is a tad steep and bumpy – not for boy racers or low-slung precious cars
  • The house is old – you should expect the odd cobweb, uneven floors and a mystery damp patch in one of the bathrooms – embrace it or this place isn't for you

Reviews

The mountains rise like an enormous wave behind this property set high on a mountainside. The air is clean, the skies so dark at night and the views stretch for miles in all directions. Inside all is comfortable in a wonderfully unfussy and elegant way. Light the wood-burner, pull a cork and set to cooking up a feast in a kitchen with the best view in Wales. Hay-on-Wye is just down the road.

Location

The neighbourhood

Immerse yourselves in mossy stone walls, bracken-covered slopes and thick woodland – walks will be sublime. Hay-on-Wye is a 12-minute drive for an excellent butcher, pubs, some cool independent shops and restaurants as well as books galore. For a treat head to the Bull's Head at Craswall. Watery fun can be had on the river Wye with plenty of canoeing opportunities and banks for picnics.

Local points of interest from Huw Evans-Bevan

  • Kate the Baker - freshly made artisan batch baker, Thursdays and Saturdays only, from a hidden ex-workshop in the back streets of Hay-on-Wye. Talgarth Mill - restored water mill still producing bread flour with excellent bakery and artisan café/bistro.
  • The Warren is a secret swimming spot!
  • The Bull's Head in Craswall - excellent Michelin acknowledged menu, full of character and very friendly team.
  • The Brecon Beacons National Park & the Black Mountains.
  • The river Wye & Llangors lake. Wye Valley Canoes in Glasbury offers great canoe hires.
  • Llanthony Priory and cellar bar. A stunning drive (or walk!) from the cottage along the Gospel Pass to this beautiful ruined abbey.
