Gîtes with insider itineraries you won’t find on Google

Travel used to begin with a conversation. Now it often starts with a search bar. Yet the most rewarding stays still come from human knowledge. On Sawday’s, booking directly with gîte owners opens a line of communication with the people who know the area best before you arrive.
And once there, that local insight deepens. Hosts can tell you which market stalls the locals queue for, what time the bread sells out, secret swim spots, and plenty more wisdom that proves the best travel advice never makes it onto a website. It’s shared in kitchens, over gates, scribbled on maps and passed on with trust. The result is richer travel shaped by people, not algorithms.
Gîte Le Bost, Dordogne
Arriving at Gîte Le Bost feels less like checking in and more like being welcomed in by old friends. On your first night, hosts Margaret and Rod invite guests over for an apéro and, if booked ahead, a relaxed homecooked dinner. This informal introduction is the perfect chance for them to share their local knowledge in a way that feels natural and unforced through conversation and thoughtful touches.
You’ll find out the best bike routes through La Forêt de la Double, swimming lakes locals return to year after year, and restaurant recommendations that skip the tourist traps. From a welcome hamper of local produce that introduces you to rural Dordogne, to Margaret’s handwritten recommendation board, it’s a stay that feels personal and well curated by people who know the area inside out.
One of our guests, Anna said: “Margaret and Rod have thought of absolutely everything, a real home from home. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They made great recommendations of restaurants, markets and activities. The best holiday we’ve had for years. We will return!”
Gîte du Rossignol, Haute-Garonne
Staying at Gîte du Rossignol is the perfect welcome into château life. Rebekah and Mark live on site and are on hand with thoughtful local guidance, from which farmers’ markets to visit in Cadours to where to eat nearby, swim in summer lakes or wander sunflower lined lanes.
Over shared poolside chats or quiet terrace evenings, guests often gather ideas for day trips to Toulouse, pottery villages like Cox or the foothills of the Pyrenees. With a welcome hamper of local food and wine waiting on arrival, the rhythm of rural life begins easily, shaped by wide views, slow mornings and insider knowledge that helps each stay unfold naturally.
One of our guests, Anya said: “The Jamiesons are wonderful hosts, they made sure we felt at home and pampered. The Chateau is conveniently located a 15-minutes’ drive to several picturesque villages, following the sunflowers fields, and we indulged in their farmers market and art lessons. The villagers were so welcoming! Will definitely return, it is a magical place!”
Gites du Perigord, Sarlat-la-Canéda, Dordogne
At Gîtes du Périgord, Dominique’s local knowhow is woven into daily life. Mornings might begin with collecting fresh bread, picking herbs from the communal potager or setting off for Sarlat’s famous markets, while afternoons bring riverside canoe trips, gentle valley walks or long swims with wide Dordogne views.
Living on site, Dominique is on hand with restaurant tips, lesser-known villages and scenic routes that reveal the region beyond the obvious stops. Evenings often gather guests together for relaxed shared meals, where conversation flows as easily as the local wine. It’s a stay shaped by seasonal rhythms and community, where insider knowledge helps families slow down, settle in and experience the Dordogne at its most authentic.
One of our guests, James said: “The owners, Dominque and Pauline, and their daughter could not have been better hosts. Joining Dominique on a one of his guided walks was one of the highlights of our week.”
Gîte O’Milepierre, Burgundy
At Gîte O’Milepierre, local gems are shared around the dinner table. Sylvain and Mickaël live in the same house and welcome guests into Burgundian life, from guidance on where to spend an afternoon wandering and the village restaurants locals’ favour, to organising wine tastings and explaining which quiet corners of the valley are worth seeking out.
Mornings can begin with shared breakfasts, while evenings offer the chance to dine in, with Sylvain’s homecooked dishes paired perfectly with regional wines. Set among legendary vineyards, the stay feels immersive without being overwhelming, shaped by generous hosting, lived experience and the pleasure of discovering Burgundy through people who call it home.
One of our guests, William said: “Sylvain is a warm and genuinely friendly host, who provided excellent dinners and breakfasts. Very good wine selection. He is also a great source of information about what to do and what to miss locally.”
Le Tay, Mayenne
At Le Tay, thoughtful hosting shows up in small but meaningful ways. Arrive on a Sunday when local shops are closed and you may find a generous welcome hamper waiting, already stocked by Ceri. Travelling with a dog? Guests have even found appointments with the local vet quietly arranged ahead of departure.
Pete and Ceri live just across the lane and point guests towards the places that fit the mood of the day or season easily, from countryside cycling routes to nearby markets, swimming lakes and village bars. Seasonal fêtes and garden events add extra colour to the calendar, giving visitors a taste of local life beyond the usual highlights.
One of our guests, Helen said: “We had planned our return for August but had to change our plans. Ceri assured that October was a great time to visit and she was right. There was plenty going on in all of the lovely towns around and the weather was just right for exploring. Everything in the the gite was just as good as last time and Ceri and Pete are great hosts.”
Gîte de la Motte Féodale, Le Mesnil Jourdain
This historic lodge is run with care and personality by the family who live nearby. Vincent welcomes guests and is always on hand with ideas shaped by years spent exploring the surrounding countryside, from scenic walks to nearby markets, as well as organising activities on site.
Julie is responsible for the thoughtful interior design, blending medieval character with modern comfort. Their sons play an active role too, with Simon leading sports activities such as archery, while Edward tends the farm animals that roam the grounds. This layered, family-led hosting gives the stay a rare sense of authenticity, where local knowledge is shared naturally rather than performed and guided by people who truly know the land and love sharing it.
One of our guests, Sebastian said: “We were absolutely thrilled with the holiday home. Vincent gave us a warm welcome and showed us the house in detail. He was always available and very helpful during our stay. Thank you so much, Vincent!”
