The Experience

Towers with limestone roofs, turret stairs and a charming pigeonnier: this seventeenth-century château oozes character. Sink into sofas on an autumn night, roast foraged chestnuts in a huge stone hearth. In summer, dine on the sumptuous terrace…the views of the valley are mesmerising.

Traditional charm on the outside and modern comfort within: find gorgeous gilded mirrors on bare stone walls, a fancy hot tub, a gym, cinema and a plush bar. Play ping-pong, volley ball and archery, unwind by the pool, or row on the lake between four islands.

The owners can arrange whatever you desire, from massages and cooking classes on site to hot-air-balloon rides nearby. Nature lovers enjoy the woodland walks around the château, while foodies love the local Sunday-morning market. You can cycle to nearby Meyrals for croissants, or pop into Saint-Cyprien for local craft shops.

If I wanted to escape from the world to a beautifully restored castle hidden in a vast, unspoilt landscape of forest and field, this is where I would go. There is so much to do on-site, including rowing on the lake, jumping in the pool and feasting on the huge terrace, that I would need more than a week there before I even wanted to venture out to discover the treasures of the Dordogne at my doorstep!

Location

The neighbourhood

The medieval market town of Saint-Cyprien is 5km away - yet the château feels truly remote. It is surrounded by impressive forests and walking trails starting straight from the door. The caves of Font de Gaume are one of the last with the original paintings still on view. Châteaux abound in the wonderful Périgord Noir, a hillier part of the Périgord: the fortress of Beynac is 13km away, and La Roque-Gageac is not much further.

Château La Carrière is located in the heart of the Périgord Noir in the Dordogne, one of the most celebrated areas in France, known for its lush landscape, stunning chateaux, beautiful medieval villages, pre-historic caves and rich food culture.
It is said that there are 1,001 chateaux in the Dordogne. Some of the most famous are less than a 20-minute drive away: Beynac (perched on a rock), Castelnaud (awesome fortress), Milandes (former home of Josephine Baker) and Commarque (fairy-tale ruin).
Some of the most beautiful towns and villages in France are on our doorstep: Sarlat (14th-century town centre), Beynac (known for its impressive castle), La Roque-Cageac (built against a rock), Domme (great views) and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère (very pretty).
Château La Carrière is very close to a number of world famous caves with pre-historic wall paintings. The most renowned is Lascaux, but some less famous ones, such as Font-de-Gaume, Bara-Bahau and Grotte du Sorcier, are awe-inspiring as well.
Food is a very important part of life in the Périgord Noir. Our village, Saint-Cyprien, has a particularly lively market on Sunday morning. And, if you like wine, we highly recommend going to our neighbour, a well-known organic wine maker.
Finally, if you like walking or mountain biking, come to the Dordogne, where you find endless forest trails. Two of them even start right at Château La Carrière. Just watch out for all the wildlife!

Introducing

Tanya & Adriaan

The friendly owners live in the gatekeeper's lodge at the beginning of the driveway: Tanya, who previously worked in fashion and had a boutique in Dublin, and Adriaan, a Dutch art historian. Looking for a lifestyle change, they wanted a place in rural France and chose the ever-popular Dordogne. In 2019 they discovered this charming château and soon after opened their doors to guests.
