The Experience

Come as a six and take both floors, or just the upstairs if there’s only four of you. You enter via an external staircase which leads onto a large balcony with a dining area – lovely to eat out here admiring the gorgeous green views. Stroll down to your own pool for a dip, read on the covered terrace, cook in the outdoor kitchen or on the barbecue. There are lawns to wander, a Prunus avenue with chairs in the shade and views beyond over woodland and meadows.

On cooler days you’ll be quite happy indoors with a good selection of books, lots of games and comfy seating. White walls, lots of light and contemporary furniture give a bright, summery feel. A big island in the kitchen is the hub and you’ll find basics plus a bottle of wine waiting for you – in season you’re offered walnuts from the owners’ trees.

Bikes can be delivered to the door, yoga can be organised, you can play boules, croquet and soft archery.

Reviews

A haven of peace and beauty in which to relax by the pool, lie in a hammock beneath a veteran tree or indulge in a gentle game of croquet, unless a burst of energy takes you outside to the medieval castles and villages that line the Dordogne, just five minutes away. Especially impressed by the attention to detail: flowers, external blinds to the windows, and links to the local community.

On arrival we drove up to a cozy, well-lit welcoming house on a hill. The equipment was high quality, tastefully and lovingly designed and selected. The kitchen was equipped with all the appliances we use at home. We enjoyed the pool area with an outdoor kitchen and a covered seating area. The grounds are expansive and offer an unforgettable stargazing experience. And this level of cleanliness is rarely found. We felt comfortable all around. Above all, the hosts were courteous, cordial, always a kind word and never intrusive. A perfect place for a really great holiday.

La Banne is a lovely place to stay and we would thoroughly recommend it. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The kitchen and living area was perfect with everything you need to cook for yourselves and relax in. The outdoor areas were also fantastic with a great pool, well thought out seating, also lots of games-archery, table tennis and croquet kept us entertained. Neil and David were perfect hosts offering perfect balance of hospitality and privacy. The local village is lovely for a meal and a mooch-lots of day trips nearby.

David, Biddenden

Another fantastic holiday at La Banne, Belves. It really is our favourite place to stay. Perfect hosts (Neil and David) were so helpful and can recommend the best places to eat. Perfect location for a quiet relaxing holiday. Your own pool and lovely surroundings. We took our two sons and their partners and all had a brilliant time. The gite and room below are all well equipped and spotlessly clean. There’s plenty to do and see in this part of the Dordogne. You’ll have a lovely time with lots of happy memories.

We’ve holidayed in France for 19 years so know when somewhere is special. La Banne is very special. The gite is perfect, extremely well equipped with super comfy beds, high quality linen and towels. The pool is lovely with a wonderful covered dining area. The garden is beautiful. But what makes it so special is Neil & David. Their attention to detail is incredible. They do everything to ensure you enjoy your holiday. This could be a light touch approach or advice and interesting conversation. I have never felt so at ease when the owners are on site. We are already planning when we can return!

Location

The neighbourhood

There are wonderful medieval villages and towns to explore, markets to buy local produce, châteaux to admire and history to soak up, all within easy reach. Hire bikes and explore the tiny village, which does have a bakery. Find cycle tracks, waymarked walks, the river Dordogne just 5kms away at Siorac-en-Périgord for launching canoes or paddle boards.

Local points of interest from Neil Walker

  • Enjoy a pleasant, 25 minute walk through country lanes, passing Sagelat’s 12th century church, up to the medieval village of Belvès with its restaurants, café-bars and weekly Saturday morning market.
  • Easy access to many châteaux and gardens, each with their own unique history and heritage, including Château des Milandes once owned by the famous jazz singer, Josephine Baker and Jardins de Marqueyssac famed for its overhanging gardens and box hedges.
  • An unforgettable experience is a flight in a hot air balloon taking in the full grandeur of the Dordogne valley and river. See the architectural and breathtaking landscapes from an entirely different perspective.
  • Cycling enthusiasts can hire bikes for collection or delivery from a company based in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle with a discount given to our guests. For walkers there are many great routes on the doorstep taking you through stunning woodlands and countryside.
  • Enjoy a delicious meat or cheese platter (or both) at Planches et Plonk wine bar in Belvès as featured in Channel 4's 'A New Life In The Sun’. They do takeaway platters too!
  • Stroll around Sarlat's bustling market only 40 minutes away, discovering fresh local produce and delicacies to give you a taste of French life.
