The Experience

The honey-hued stone farmhouse is light and spacious with a big kitchen for group cooking (or hire the private chef), a table made for long conversations, toys and games for children and heaps of books. Le Mazet is perfect for two escapees from the main house and is just as pretty with tiled floors and heavily beamed ceilings. The whole place is geared up for families, especially the heated private pool.

The local bakery delivers fresh croissants and bread some mornings if you order the day before, supper can be waiting for you on your arrival day, country walks lead from the houses and you can hire bikes to explore local markets. Wander the gardens and help yourself to fresh fruit and nuts in season, walk down to the auberge restaurant next door for delicious food and natural wines in summer.

Only the sound of distant church bells disturbs the peace and quiet. As the sun goes down light up the barbecue or get cosy round the fire.

Reviews

This is without doubt the nicest holiday home I have ever rented. The house has been beautifully restored in superb taste and is maintained to a very high standard. Every detail has been thought through and the house is extremely well equipped - good quality and plentiful kitchenware, fun games for children and adults inside and out (table tennis, archery, badminton, pool inflatables), comfy deckchairs and sunloungers positioned in perfect spots around the garden etc. Rupert & Franck are responsive, helpful and charming hosts. It doesn't get any better!

From the moment we drove up the white gravel drive (after 2x five hour epic drives from Calais), Le Mas et Le Mazet welcomed us with open and relaxed, luxurious arms! Rupert and Frank have thought of everything: an elegant, useable interior space with a well stocked kitchen, a generous (and uncannily useful) welcome hamper of local produce and a library of books and games for all ages. Their beds are second to none comfort wise and again their eye for detail matters - White Company toiletries and loads of soft towels. Run out of space to wax lyrical on its charming location...just go!

What an amazing place!! So relaxing even with the rain there was plenty of space to still sit outside undercover to read and chill. Every evening we ate outside to enjoy the views. There was 8 of us on this visit and we all slept so well the bedding and pillows so comfortable. Without a doubt we would return for another relax! Rupert and Franck are the perfect hosts, nothing was too much bother, always happy for a chat if wanted or advice on where the best markets are to go to. My advice is just book and enjoy , but you might have to beat us to it! 😀

Simply Idyllic! What Rupert and Franck have created in Le Mas & Le Mazet is the perfect retreat for a chilled holiday. We haven't had such a relaxing experience for a long time. Surrounded by the beautiful countryside, with the most amazing crimson sunsets, Le Mas / Mazet is a piece of paradise. The hospitality shown by the guys is fantastic, but subtle - allowing you to relax, and enjoy the tranquility of the French countryside. Sit back and enjoy the country views, use the summer kitchen, relax by / in the pool - or go for a walk or a leisurely drive. Ah yes, we'll be back! Bien sur!

What a find! We have just returned from a magical week at Le Mas. Eight adults and a 10-month old baby gathered from across the globe to celebrate my 40th birthday and we couldn't have chosen a more perfect winter paradise. The house interiors have been beautifully designed with a sophisticated contemporary tone - often difficult to come across in rural France. Rupert and Franck have thought of EVERYTHING so all you need to do is show up, and relax! If you do wish to venture out, Rupert has you covered with A* recommendations for food, wine, massages, truffles hunting... Perfection.

Location

The neighbourhood

From the houses you can glimpse the hamlet of Sainte-Croix with its 12th-century church, 2km away. The nearest restaurant in Montferrand-du-Périgord is 3km away. Hike, go horse-riding and hire bikes, canoe or swim in the river. Within 15 minutes' drive (9km) are two bastide towns, Monpazier and Beaumont. Both have restaurants, shops and weekly markets, and Beaumont has a night market in summer.

Local points of interest from Rupert Springfield

  • The Daily Telegraph reviewed us online with a score of 9/10 and The Sunday Times has featured the properties numerous times. Links on our website. The French Ministry of Tourism has awarded Le Mas with 5 stars.
  • There is a great 30 minute walk from the house past a 12th century church with original wall paintings, through a wood to a ruined castle towering over a beautiful Dordogne village, ending at a restaurant serving drinks and delicious food.
  • We can arrange for a private French chef (who had a Michelin star for 8 years!) who can cook for you at Le Mas. We also have a local baker who can deliver your croissant and bread order in the mornings.
  • Don't miss the best market of the week on Sunday morning in Issigeac - bustling, French and with delicious produce.
  • Prior to your holiday we'll send you information about the great restaurants in the area which we can book for you, bike hire delivered to Le Mas for you, and massages, pilates and and yoga in the garden.
  • Situated on top of a hill, the houses offer stunning uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and the 12th century church, whose bells you can hear across the valley.
