The Experience

At the end of a country lane curving through forest and field, a cluster of 16th-century farm buildings has been transformed into luxurious retreats by Rupert and Franck who live in the former tobacco barn nearby. They are thoughtful and generous hosts.

The farmhouse is light and spacious with a big kitchen for many helpers – although you can hire a chef if you choose. There are heaps of games, toys and books for children, a long table for sociable meals and lovely gardens with a heated pool. The cottage is peaceful with your own private garden area. You’re left wine and local treats, you can help yourselves to fruit from the orchard and an artisan baker delivers some mornings to both places.

Hire bikes to explore nearby hamlets and villages, swim or canoe in the river, hop in the car to visit local markets and brocantes. These are fuss-free places to stay and very generous to boot.

Reviews

Domi, Normandie

A jewel in the crown of greenery. There are places where charm, authenticity, peace and kindness come together, and they are rare. Le Mazet is one of them. We spent a week in this haven of peace and will treasure unforgettable memories of this very special place. What can we say? Everything has been thought of to ensure the well-being of our visitors, with excellent comfort, a superbly equipped kitchen, carefully selected furniture and a tastefully decorated gîte.

Sitting under the oak tree, glass of rosé in hand, watching a kestrel, silhouetted by the setting sun, hunting on the fringe of the cornfield, and you think `Is that the same kestrel nesting about 20ft from our window?' and the answer is yes, yes it is, because that's the sort of place Le Mazet is. Peaceful, rural, yet within easy reach of amenities (half an hour or so from the airport), this is where the world stops. Rupert and Frank are the perfect hosts, and the little stone house has been equipped with all you need; they really have thought of everything, even ITV3 on the telly.

Another wonderful week (our fifth spring visit) at Le Mas! The grandkids swam in the pool almost every day, and we had great rambles in the countryside. Rupert and Franck recommended a couple of bastide towns we had not visited, Belves and Villereal, and we happily revisited the peacocks, mazes, and Dordogne river vistas in the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac. As always, a comfortable house with enough space to spread out and have a quiet moment, balanced by the big kitchen / dining / fireplace room as a great place to gather. Thanks for a lovely stay!

Le Mazet is the most charming place we've stayed in the Dordogne. A beautifully restored stone cottage with all mod cons, lovely gardens and stunning views across the valley to the 12th century church of St Croix. Perfectly located—peaceful and private, but only a short drive to charming villages with great local markets, shops and restaurants. Rupert and Franck are the most welcoming hosts - full of insider tips on the best places to eat and explore. They’ve truly thought of everything. We’ve stayed three times now (once in winter, twice in spring) and it just keeps getting better.

Katharina, Athens

When you are dreaming of an ideal stay for your vacation, you are probably imagining something like Le Mas & Le Mazet without even knowing that such a place actually exists in France! Set in the striking countryside of Dordogne, close to quaint villages and (pre)history-packed areas, Le Mas & Le Mazet offer the rare combination of relaxed yet stylish stay in nature with all the comforts, privacy, and the warmest accommodating, but discreet hosting one could possibly imagine. We spent one of our best vacation weeks at Le Mazet.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re in the middle of the countryside here; the hamlet of Sainte-Croix with its 12th-century church can be glimpsed from the cottage – it’s 2km away, or a 20-minute walk. The nearest restaurant in Montferrand-du-Périgord is 3km, just over a half hour’s walk. Within 15 minutes’ drive (or 9km) are two fortified towns, Monpazier and Beaumont; both have weekly markets, restaurants and shops.

Local points of interest from Rupert Springfield

  • The Daily Telegraph reviewed us online with a score of 9/10 and The Sunday Times has featured the properties numerous times. Links on our website. The French Ministry of Tourism has awarded Le Mas with 5 stars.
  • Monpazier and Beaumont are two beautiful bastide villages, only 12 minutes away, both of which have weekly markets, regular brocantes, night markets and lots more to enjoy.
  • There is a great 30 minute walk from the house past a 12th century church with original wall paintings, through a wood to a ruined castle towering over a beautiful Dordogne village, ending at a restaurant serving drinks and delicious food.
  • Prior to your holiday we'll send you information about the great restaurants in the area which we can book for you, bike hire delivered to Le Mas for you, and massages, pilates and and yoga in the garden.
  • We can arrange for a private French chef (who had a Michelin star for 8 years!) who can cook for you at Le Mas. We also have a local baker who can deliver your croissant and bread order in the mornings.
  • Situated on top of a hill, the houses offer stunning uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and the 12th century church, whose bells you can hear across the valley.
