The Experience
The feel is of the countryside, with deer, pheasants, hares and the odd wild boar plodding about. The house sits in five hectares of gardens and grounds with a fecund orchard (jams and compotes at breakfast) and mature cypress trees leading to the front door. Interiors are calm, paints are non-toxic, materials natural and electricity provided by solar panels – much thought has gone into sustainability alongside comfort.
Relax in the library with comfortable seating, enjoy some wonderful artworks and ceramics, take breakfast in the elegant dining room, in the garden, or in your bedroom. You’re treated to fresh viennoiseries and bread from the local bakery, homemade pastries and biscuits, hot bacon, eggs or muffins, charcuterie and cheeses.
Bedrooms, two downstairs, the rest up, all have en suite showers (one has a bath too) and are filled with light from floor-to-ceiling windows. Start your day with a lap or two in the saltwater pool.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're free to enjoy walking through the gardens, orchard and wider grounds. The nearest village is Carignan-de-Bordeaux, a four-minute drive or 15-minute walk, with shops, pharmacy and a church. There are plenty of excellent restaurants within a 10 to 15-minute drive. Wine tasting and culture in both Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion are not to be missed – lovely day trips.
Local points of interest from Gwynneth Costecalde
- Only a 15-minute drive from Bordeaux city centre, our boutique hotel has the best of both worlds, only 35 minutes from the vineyards of Saint-Émilion and 45 minutes from the stunning Bassin d’Arcachon.
- Explore Bordeaux for a city experience or vineyard tours and wine tasting so close by.
