The Experience

It is rare indeed to visit an empty house in midwinter and experience an instant warmth that brings the place to life. Your French/German hosts – Valérie and Frank – come from the world of performing arts (she a dance choreographer, he a set designer) and have now turned their attention to viticulture and making your stay special; they have the gift of hospitality tenfold, leave you cherries and walnuts (in season!) and love to share their passion for producing organic wine. Your space? A beautifully renovated, 400-year-old ochre-washed ‘pigeonnier’ with a sun-drenched terrace on an idyllic old farm among vines, a five-minute walk from the village. Step through a glazed door to a stylish yet cosy vaulted and beamed living room with a cool stone floor, minimal high-quality furniture and old walls. The kitchen is simple, the bedroom is fresh and light, and there are single beds on the mezzanine. There’s a pool to dunk in (yours from 10am to 6pm), Saint Émilion is close, the beaches of Arcachon and the boulevards of Bordeaux are an easy drive, and in summer Castillon gives a re-enactment of the last battle of the Hundred Years War.

Reviews

Eve, Paris

Le Pigeonnier is an idyllic countryside retreat. The setting amidst the vines couldn't be more beautiful, the pool is delightful and the house is well equipped and stays nice and cool even on hot days. We did the trip without a car and managed perfectly well as we mostly wanted to relax rather than do lots of sightseeing. Frank kindly picked us up from Castillon (you can also book a taxi) and there are two bikes you can borrow to get to, for example, the lovely swimming lake that is about 20 minutes' ride away.

Where do we start? If you are looking for a little corner of "paradise" with your feet IN the vineyard surrounded by peace and tranquility, then Le Pigeonnier does tick all those boxes. Not only can you get fresh eggs from the friendly and entertaining roaming hens but you will never fall short of a good organic red as supply by the owners' own brand is at hand. We have seen may places in France and we must say that the region is fabulous and Le Pigeonnier is a comfortable and ideally located starting point to explore the lovely surroundings with easy access to all facilities.

Tranquil setting, providing the perfect first week for our holiday. The gite is very comfortable with a small but very well equipped kitchen. We loved sitting on the patio and looking across the vineyard. The children enjoyed having access to the swimming pool which is so clean and well cared for. We spent several days at Lac de la Cadie which is perfect for children wanting to enjoy paddle boarding and swimming in open water. We enjoyed a wander round Saint Emilion and a trip to the beach just south of Aracachon. Valerie is a wonderful host and so wanted us to enjoy our stay.

Le Pigeonnier is in a wonderful peaceful location close to the river and surrounded by grape vines, yet within an hour of Bordeaux and the sights of the Dordogne. The interior is simple, with a well-equipped kitchen, and the private garden and (shared) pool are just dreamy. Valérie was a very kind host, available to answer any questions and to recommend some of the many wonderful places to eat and drink nearby (including an excellent riverside pizzeria just 5 minutes’ drive away). The perfect location for countryside, coast and culture.

Toby, London

My family and I stayed a week with Valerie and Frank in their lovely gite, Le Pigeonnier. The setting was idyllic and the house was lovely! On top Valerie is absolutely lovely and very helpful (we didn’t see much of Frank as I think he was busy working)! Their wine is also a very nice glass and organic to boot!! We also very much enjoyed the pool and the tranquility. I have to admit that we loved the region too and we did plenty of cycling! If you get the chance go and visit the Chateau Le Castellet in saint Emilion as the wine is to die for! Ask for Patrick as he is great!!
