The Experience

It is rare indeed to visit an empty house in midwinter and experience an instant warmth that brings the place to life. Your French/German hosts – Valérie and Frank – come from the world of performing arts (she a dance choreographer, he a set designer) and have now turned their attention to viticulture and making your stay special; they have the gift of hospitality tenfold, leave you cherries and walnuts (in season!) and love to share their passion for producing organic wine. Your space? A beautifully renovated, 400-year-old ochre-washed ‘pigeonnier’ with a sun-drenched terrace on an idyllic old farm among vines, a five-minute walk from the village. Step through a glazed door to a stylish yet cosy vaulted and beamed living room with a cool stone floor, minimal high-quality furniture and old walls. The kitchen is simple, the bedroom is fresh and light, and there are single beds on the mezzanine. There’s a pool to dunk in (yours from 10am to 6pm), Saint Émilion is close, the beaches of Arcachon and the boulevards of Bordeaux are an easy drive, and in summer Castillon gives a re-enactment of the last battle of the Hundred Years War.

Lovely, peaceful rural setting...marvelous view through the vineyards to the distant hills. Valerie is wonderfully charming, extremely informative/efficient & incredibly helpful--she even assisted us with trying to charge our car when the battery failed & then called the tow truck. And she brought us fresh eggs, courtesy of her delightful chickens, Jurassic & The Twins! Enjoyed the expansive, private patio & swimming pool. All very clean & well-equipped. Comfy bed. "Country" WiFi allows more time to decompress & explore--beautiful St. Emilion is a short drive away. Mille mercis, Valerie!

This little place was ideal for our needs. The area is quiet and it is so peaceful and wonderful to wake in the morning and look out at the vineyards. There is the town of Castillon not far from here and there is everything you need there and lots to do around the area. Valérie could not have been more friendly and helpful. She communicated very well in English and have us some tips on places to visit. We loved meeting Banga the cat, the wandering chickens and the resident green tree frog. Serenity abounds and the sunset was gorgeous. We had a lovely time.

We had a fabulous week at Le Chalard and really appreciated the lovely stone property and the lines of vines leading out into fields and gentle hills. The house felt pleasantly cool and spacious for our family of three and had all we needed to cook for ourselves. As guests we had the privacy of our own terrace and garden area, but we very much enjoyed meeting Valerie and Frank, who are wonderful hosts, very welcoming, friendly and accommodating. The very well maintained salt water pool provided a lot of pleasure to our five year old son. Merci Valérie et Frank et à bientôt!

The pictures don’t do this delightful property justice. The Terrace is sublime, just what we dream of with lovely views through the vines, a shady tree and flowering borders. Inside is well designed, good shower, perfect small kitchen, lovely china. The pool is superb – beautiful new sun loungers which arrived on the same day we did! It’s a great romantic get away for two – but four can squeeze happily in. Our two daughters (in their early 20s) decided to join us at short notice and they fell in love with it too. Valerie and Frank are the most delightful, friendly and helpful hosts.
