The Experience
A fine, three-storey house with parts dating back to the medieval times – find exposed beams, stone walls and large fireplaces. You enter through a side gate into a magical walled courtyard with peaceful gardens, a swimming pool and sun terraces among the pot plants, olive trees and lavender beds. The whole place is beautifully put together, with splendid rooms full of character, colourful art and designer features.
Spill out into a huge kitchen, a gymnasium with a full-sized Swedish sauna, a music room with grand piano and cinema, a summer kitchen conservatory, a pub-inspired games room, a formal drawing room and lots of convivial places to eat, inside and out. Bedrooms, named after London theatres, are spread out over three floors, four with en suite showers and two sharing a bathroom. Hotel-grade bedding and romantic views will revive you.
Stroll to shops, restaurants, the famous Saturday market, or take a picnic to the river bank.

We think you'll love
- Ditching the car and jumping on the train – there are ten a day to Bordeaux, Bergerac or even Sarlat
- The sheer theatricality and comfort of the house – the owner is a lighting designer and has let his imagination soar
- All the watery activities on the river – canoe and boat hire, wine festivals and fishing
You should know
- There's no designated parking but plenty on the street or in the square – it's very easy to come without a car
- Three floors mean lots of stairs which might be a problem for some

Location
The neighbourhood
Sainte-Foy-la-Grande is a bustling little place with lots of restaurants with sunny terraces to amble to, including Coté Bastide, Michelin starred for special treats. Visit the market, enjoy riverside walks, explore prehistoric caves in the Dordogne valley or Saint-Émilion (44km) for superb wine tasting and buying. Bergerac is 25km and Sarlat 95km, both beautiful at any time of year.
Local points of interest from Mike Robertson
- Sainte Foy La Grande is a medieval bastide town that is enveloped on three sides by Pineuilh, its more modern suburb.
- Over the bridge is another of the 'burbs - Port-Sainte-Foy-et-Ponchapt and in both places are supermarkets, restaurants, butchers and bars.
- Tavereau is slap bang in the middle of the bastide and along the two main streets (Rue de la République and Rue Victor Hugo) together with the town square there are local shops, bars, restaurants and banks.
- A five minute drive or a twenty minute walk will take you to the edge of Pineuilh where there is a retail park with a hypermarket and other large outlet stores.
- Two streets from the house is the Dordogne. There is a long promenade to drink in the view or more sensibly there are seating areas where you can drink in the wine.
