The Experience

Arrive through gates and up a shingle drive, which meanders around to the main entrance of this old stone, blue-shuttered farmhouse. Single-storey and surrounded by gardens, there’s stacks of space: lie on loungers by the pool while the children burn off steam; bask in the views over orchards and fields of sunflowers. Sip a glass of wine on the gorgeous vine-covered terrace as the sun goes down, then gather around the dinner table in the vaulted-ceilinged salle. The kitchen is well equipped, there’s a den with toys, and a snug with sofas and a wood-burner for cosy evenings. Rooms are neutral, with white walls and splashes of colour, floors are tiled and refreshingly cool under foot. Bedrooms are fresh and welcoming with new linen and towels; from the double there are doors opening onto the terrace, and all have views northeast over the gardens; none are en suite, but there’s a smart bathroom, a shower room, and a separate loo. Visit bastide towns, farmers’ markets, Pirate Land for the young ones. St Emilion and Bordeaux are just over an hour away. It’s less than a mile to a shop and restaurants are 10-15 minutes’ drive.

Reviews

Jenny, Norwich

La Cachette provides the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday. There are many lovely towns to visit and activities galore. We went canoeing on the River Lot, did a brilliant crazy golf course, visited caves, went to museums and visited the fantastic Chateau at Duras. Lots of info in the house and Angela also gave us some helpful recommendations. After a trip out, returning to the villa for complete peace and quiet and a sunbathe & dip in the pool was perfect. The villa is spacious, has everything you could possibly want for a fun, relaxing break. The children loved it and so did we!

Lucy, Burton on Trent

We absolutely loved it at La Cachette. It's such a lovely home away from home with everything you could need. Myself, husband, 6 year old son, 10 month old son and parents in law were all very comfortable here. Lin and Angela made so much effort to ensure our stay was relaxed. There were stair gates put up and loads and loads of toys to keep the boys entertained. The pool is fantastic and in great condition. The gate and alarm really made me feel at ease. The surrounding area is so beautiful with a couple of big supermarkets not far away. Lots of lovely places to visit as well.

Rob, Norfolk

Great holiday at La Cachette. 8 adults, 4 children, 3 generations. We all loved the region, the location and most of all the house. Great views, lovely garden and pool, spacious accommodation. A lovely place to cook, eat, swim, play and have fun. We'd love to go back.

Robert, Norwich

What a wonderfully relaxing house. Le Cachette made the perfect family holiday. A cold beer and wine welcomed us on arrival after a long journey and we were immediately on down time. So much to do within a few miles, beautiful scenery, history, good restaurants, activities and small towns to visit. Everything is thought of by the owners with helpful information to plan the stay there. The night markets are a must, especially Fongrave for foodies. The villa is beautifully decorated, large spaces to relax in and around the house, table tennis and the pool a good antidote to a days activities.

Vanessa, London

We had a wonderfully peaceful week in La Cachette. It is a little peace of heaven, surrounded by a generous garden and widespread countryside views. The house is well proportioned, comfortable and with a great outside space for meals. We were also delighted the owner purchased a table tennis table on hearing our boys were fans. Angela was always very kind and helpful so even though the place is 'off the beaten track' you don't feel you are left to figure everything out yourself.

Local points of interest from Lindsay Whitehead

  • In July and August the local villages come alive with night markets, where you can sample local freshly cooked food and wines, all while enjoying live music and the warmth of the long summer evenings. Our favourites are Fongrave and Issigeac
  • Although the Lot et Garonne is 2hrs from the coast, local river beaches are only 15 minutes drive away, where you can swim, sunbathe, play or simply relax with a picnic in the beautiful surroundings.
  • Wine tours to local vineyards can be arranged by prior request, but the most popular is St Emilion, which produces world famous red wine and which is a 45 minute drive away through rolling countryside. There's a train around the town and lovely cafes too.
  • There are many great local restaurants but if you fancy something extra special, a short drive to Bordeaux will allow you to sample one of Rick Stein's favourite restaurants, as featured on his most recent weekend breaks series.
  • Golf, horse-riding and canoeing are all available locally.
  • Cycling is especially popular locally as the area has the rolling landscape of Tuscany - we can arrange local cycle hire, provide maps and also introduce you to the local club which previous guests have enjoyed
