The Experience

This is a handsome home filled with antiques and good art. It has a relaxed, easy-going charm about it and groups of friends or intergenerational families will find plenty of space to relax in two elegant lounges, two studies and a book-filled library, all interconnected. It’ll be fun to come together for cheerful meals in the modern kitchen-diner, or go formal and and eat in one of two dining rooms.

You’re in a market town, a two-minute walk from the bakery, a little further to the centre for cafés, restaurants and a Saturday foodie market. Lovely to mooch around picking up goodies to try later. Wine lovers will be in heaven with three excellent vineyards within easy reach, walkers too – hike the wild reaches of Morvan Park or visit medieval villages.

Return for sundowners in the formal gardens, an evening playing boardgames and tinkling the piano. Light the fire if the air is chill then slope upstairs to gorgeous bedrooms.

Reviews

A truly wonderful home from home. Grand, spacious and full of lovely things, though comfortable and practical too. Very well equipped and our party of 6 were well looked after. Quality beds and linens, privacy between bedrooms (none of the doubles are immediately adjacent to each other- which gives you some idea of the house’s scale). We enjoyed pottering round the town and visits further a field. Lovely town garden, simply but well planted. Highly recommended. CP

Chris, Oxford

I immediately loved this grand yet homely house, filled with art, antique furniture and books (and let's not forget the grand piano!). The perfect home for a large group of friends or for families. It is perfectly located for day trips to explore Burgundy's treasures: vineyards, the Morvan, castles, medieval towns. Or stroll to one of Saulieu's many restaurants (one is Michelin starred!)

Agnès, Sawday's Inspector

An elegant, well-located house with complete peace and privacy. Street gates opened into a courtyard for our cars – only needed for daytrips, as almost everything was within walking distance in town. Beautifully proportioned and decorated rooms, an excellent mix of spaces to meet our every need – not to mention outside in the courtyard and secluded walled garden. First floor is perfect for privacy – with interconnected rooms that can be closed off in a variety of configurations to accommodate families of different sizes. A wonderful trip - we would recommend this house without hesitation!

Michael, London

This beautiful house on a quiet street in Saulieu’s centre has been restored to its 19th century glory - perfect for a family gathering or group of friends. The impressive salon and library overlook the lovely garden. There’s a large kitchen, a lovely dining room, intimate breakfast room and a further sitting room. Upstairs are 6 ensuite bedrooms. Inside the grand gates is parking for 3 cars and an outside dining area. Saulieu has excellent shops, good restaurants and a weekly market. Dijon, Beaune and the Burgundy vineyards are not far. We had a comfortable, relaxing stay. Highly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Chablis vineyards are all within an hour's drive - tours and tastings can be arranged. Pretty medieval towns and villages abound: Semur-en-Auxois, Avallon, Dijon and Beaune, all within an hour. The remarkable Cistercian Fontenay Abbey is 50km. Lake swim, sail, walk or simply float above it all in a hot-air balloon. There's golf and horse riding close by too.

Local points of interest from David Nelson

  • Within a short walk of all necessary facilities but private and with great space, both inside and out. The town has several points of interest, being of Roman origin, churches, a museum and plenty of shops and places to eat to suit all budgets.
  • One of the major houses in the town, with lovely architecture, high ceilings, and light filled good sized rooms.
  • Filled with Antiques, but with comfortable, new good quality beds, bedlinen and towels. Combining history with comfort.
  • In easy reach of the great outdoors for walkers and cyclists (bikes available to hire in town), wine tours, Dijon, Beaune, Chablis and the historic centres of Northern Burgundy.
  • Flexible booking times, check in and check out, cook, maid service, yoga and bespoke tours can all be arranged. Please let us know what you would like.
  • Our objective is for you to feel at home, and to provide a bespoke service to suit you.

Introducing

David Nelson

David and Susie bought and restored the property in 2016 - they live in London and visit as often as they can. They love renovation projects and were drawn to the grace and spaciousness of the house, as well as the town. They adore the food, wine and surrounding countryside and always find so much to do in the region. Madame Moatti will meet you and give a tour of the house when you arrive.
