The Experience

Walk into a vast hall with a flagstoned floor and a fine curved staircase, fresh flowers arranged beautifully and busts of family ancestors – it’s a grand welcome. You have your own large and inviting drawing room in soft green colours with wide sofas and a warming fireplace. A special salon for watching films is a super place to be on rainy days.

Breakfast is a continental treat served in the elegant dining room or out on the covered terrace with sweeping views; dinner can be cooked for you – perhaps asparagus, tarragon chicken with Camargue red rice, apricot tart and cheese. The sparkling pool is large, with a shallow end for children and plenty of sun loungers. In the evening there are lights under the trees which transform the space.

Lovely to sleep in such colourful, well-furnished bedrooms, some huge and some cosier and all with en suite bathrooms. Find a quiet spot in the lush garden or head off on scenic walks from the door.

Reviews

What a glorious place to gather with friends or family for a stay away from the buzz of the world. A restful yoga retreat, an art course, or simply a blissful weekend as a chambre d'hôte guest. Here you find generous hospitality, great comfort, rich colours, and open horizons. I would love to come back here!

Location

The neighbourhood

You'll find lots of bikes to borrow so you can head off to explore the area. This is a sanctuary for wildlife, walks and picnics, with garrigue and coniferous pine forests. Spot plenty of birds and some rare wild orchids. Palaja is 7km for local shops, post office etc. and has a good Argentinian restaurant, La Pampa. Carcassonne is a 20-minute drive, Mediterranean beaches an hour.

Local points of interest from Viola & James

  • During the summer months, the region becomes alive with cultural events, from local village festivals and fairs to music concerts. The Festival de Carcassonne, which takes place in July is one of the ten biggest festivals in France.
  • Nestled in the heart of the Corbières, Domaine is renowned for its spectacular unspoilt landscape and natural beauty, and there are no shortages of walks across its 630 acres of hills and forest. We highly recommend taking a walk up the Montahut Est hill.
  • Tucked away between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, the Aude is a dream location for cyclists, providing a wonderful mix of hilly inland rides and more gentle paths alongside its rivers and wine routes.
  • The history of the Domaine de la Vène is closely tied to its horses, and several of the surrounding meadows have been converted into pasture. The stables are still today home to two retired horses.
  • The Pyrenees offer some fantastic skiing, which you’ll find is totally unspoilt, more intimate, family-friendly, and affordable than the Alps. The ski resort at the Mont d’Olmes is within 1h40 drive from the house.
  • Located only 15 minutes from the house on ancient vineyards, the Domaine d’Auriac has an 18-hole golf course that is open all year round. The course’s perfectly manicured lawns and exceptional panorama on the local landscape.

Introducing

Viola & James

James bought this rambling old winery many years ago and has been restoring it with much energy, taste and flair since. He was previously an art dealer, hence the many fine paintings, ceramics, furniture and textiles. He loves to engage with visitors and is an enthusiastic storyteller. Viola, who helps run the place and cooks for you, creates fine hand-embroidered botanical textiles.
