The Experience
Perched above a tiny, traffic-free hamlet in the Gard, the views from this ancient sheep barn stretch west across the lavender to the distant Cévennes – and the sunsets are something else. Wander down through the olive grove to the 12-metre saltwater pool, set up a pétanque match or find a shady spot to listen to the birds. Not a whisper of traffic reaches this peaceful spot.
Inside, thick stone walls, beamed ceilings and stone floors keep things naturally cool even in high summer. The fully-equipped open-plan kitchen, living area and both bedrooms open directly onto the patio for long summer evenings outdoors.
Owners Nicole and Delphine have renovated with a light touch, preserving the original features while adding modern en suite shower rooms to each bedroom. They welcome you with a bottle of local wine and a homemade apéro – and then leave you entirely to yourselves.

You should know

Location
The neighbourhood
Le Clos des Sullys (open April to autumn) is a popular restaurant just a short stroll away. Goudargues (7km) has a small supermarket and bustling Wednesday market; Barjac (10km) has more shops, a Friday market and good cafés. Canoe, paddle board and swim in the Cèze river (five-min drive). The UNESCO Grotte Chauvet (35 mins) should not be missed.
Local points of interest from Nicole Azzaro
- Our village, Montclus, is magnificent and has been named one of the most beautiful villages in France. As for our hamlet, Bernas, it’s no coincidence that we live here! It’s authentic, surrounded by nature, and offers breathtaking views.
- Our garden is planted with lavender and olive trees. We have placed sun loungers under two large olive trees near the pool which will provide welcome shade. Watch the sunset with the lovely evening breeze sweeping in.
- Twice a year, on 15 August and at Easter, an international antiques and flea market is held in Barjac (10km away). It’s impossible to leave empty handed.
- If you enjoy hiking or cycling, you’ve come to the right place. The paths start from your doorstep. Our region is well known for this, and you’ll often come across keen sports enthusiasts out and about.
- Visit Goudargues market (7km) on Wednesdays and the Friday market in Barjac (10km) . These food markets offer all the regional specialities, including the famous goat’s and sheep’s cheeses.
- Our region is brimming with stunning natural sites, caves and sinkholes, including the Cocalière caves, the Salamandre cave and the Aven d’Orgnac. And there’s no shortage of culture either! The Avignon Theatre Festival takes place in July.
