The Experience

Bring the gang for a convivial holiday near the Cévennes National Park. It’s wild and rugged here: stroll through forest and under aromatic pines, canoe down fast-flowing rivers or hop onto Robert Louis Stevenson’s trail – a journey he undertook by donkey in 1878.

Back at the house there’s heaps to keep everyone from toddlers to teenagers occupied. Toys, board games, table tennis, boules, DVDs, and the pool house set up for outdoor living – fridge, cooker, plenty of loungers. Eat outside on the terrace. Inside it’s equally easy-going, an open-plan kitchen diner with plenty of everything; step down to the snug living room with an open fire for chilly nights. Spread out in big comfortable bedrooms, four doubles (three have en suite showers) and a single upstairs, two doubles down.

Visit medieval villages, Vézénobres is a ten-minute drive. Stock up at foodie markets – Uzès (twice weekly) is excellent. Go antique and brocante hunting at weekends.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Cévennes National Park (20km) is a fascinating mix of hills, caves, gorges, forests and rewarding plateaux. Catch the steam train in Anduze (20 mins) to St-Jean-du-Gard for river swimming. The Caves of Trabuc (35 mins) have incredible stalactites. Order bread from the local tabac, there's an excellent restaurant (Auberge des Voutins) 2kms from the house and the crêperie in Vézénobres is good.

Local points of interest from The Roberts

  • The house is the combination of an old stone barn and French cotton mill. The combining structures were rescued and restored in the late 90s. The thick stone walls keep the living area and back of the house cool, even in the summer heat.
  • The house is set within 15 acres of fenced and totally private land. The pool looks out over nothing but fields and is not overlooked by anything from above or below.
  • The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need for large groups, including two american style fridge freezers (one in the pool house) and an additional drinks fridge. There are two dishwashers so washing up is never a chore!
  • Outside there are 2 separate patios for eating & relaxation. The pool is large (15m x 7m) & has an automatic safety cover w/ security clips. Adjacent to the pool is the pool house, which provides additional ensuite accommodation, large lounge & kitchen.
  • Locally there is a rich cultural history and plenty for those who want to explore. There are multiple historic sites close by including the Market towns of Uzes and Anduze and well as the Roman city museums and amphitheatre at Nimes.
  • There are two nearby aerial walkways (high ropes and zip wires) which are great fun for both children and adults. Alternatively canoeing from Collias takes you right underneath the historic Pont de Gard along the river Gard.

Introducing

The Roberts

Robin and Lesley have owned the house for 22 years so you really get the benefit of their home from home. They visit from London whenever they can with their children and grandchildren. Their son Tobi manages the bookings, and on arrival you'll be met by the neighbour (kind, reliable, speaks French only) who lives next door with his wife and children.
