The Experience

You arrive to the enchantment of authentic old stone walls and wild rushing water. 1737 is engraved over the door of the mill, the wheel and millstones lie intact, to be remounted “sometime”. Alongside the river, the big meadow begs for deckchairs and ball games and good timber furniture beckons from the barbecue terrace. The recently decorated house is generous and relaxing inside: white, soft blues and greys with an attractive mix of old and new furniture, two superb stone fireplaces (logs provided) and a good-sized kitchen/diner. You’ll find a bottle of grape juice made by the friendly owners who live nearby. In the sitting room, a big drawer holds plenty of board games, there are books and DVDs and a long inviting sofa. The double room is beyond, as are the big shower room, laundry and wc. The single bed is up on the wide mezzanine leading to the twin room; this could be the children’s floor. Swim in the millpool, fish from the weir, canoe up to Quissac, watch kingfishers… and there are masses of outings: the Cévennes, the Camargue, Roman Nîmes, lovely and lively Montpellier.

Reviews

Alex, LONDON

Having been lucky enough to stay in this beautiful location twice over the past few years with friends, I cannot recommend it enough. Days were spent kayaking down the river behind the mill, reading, walking, exploring the Saturday market in nearby Sommieres, and once we also went for dinner in Montpellier. It is very private and a fabulous place to wind down. Cannot recommend enough!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Steven Maisel

  • Sommieres Saturday market is a must, looking forward to consuming oysters, cheese, fresh bread and chilled Picpoul wine from the market at local restaurants keeps us going through the winter months. There are all the sights, sounds and smells of Provence
  • Roman Nîmes with its arena, ferias, Maison Carré , Norman Foster designed library is a regular haunt especially on Thursday nights when the city welcomes all kinds of music, from Flamenco to rock in the open. Try the stalls, wine tasting and tango session
  • The Pont du Gard is another Roman masterpiece, bringing water to Nîmes. In the summer, there are fireworks & concerts to enjoy
  • Montpellier is not far away., a dynamic university city with the famous Comedie square, music festivals and museums. There are also many small shops selling wonderful jewelry, clothing and gifts
  • The beaches of the Med are close with Le Grand Travers our favourite. Spend the day on the golden sand, in the clear blue water and finish it at one of the excellent restaurants & night clubs on the beach such as La Voile bleue
  • The Camargue with its wild horses, bulls and gardiens is well worth a visit in a hoverboat. Arles and Saintes-.Maries-de-la-Mer are also close by
