The Experience

Watch the world from your window, the locals clutching their baguettes on their way home. Two pretty townhouses in the centre of a quiet little village, this has been a restaurant-hotel since it was bought in 1903 by a remarkable widow, Madame Hamard, who built up an excellent reputation – Parisian actors loved it and the Duke of Windsor passed by. New owners Alice and Olivier have a gastronomic background and are full of energy and enthusiasm. They’ve already redecorated the restaurant in restful, contemporary tones – bedrooms are next but all are spotless, comfortable and attractive. The two big ground-floor rooms are tasteful; upstairs there are pale walls and light, bright fabrics; the two smallest rooms under the roof are charming in simple country style; the ‘chalet’ room over the restaurant is completely different with its wood-slatted walls, and cheerful checked fabrics. Another reason to stay is the seriously good food, traditional with original touches. It’s popular with the locals so book your table at weekends. An excellent place to start a family holiday or spend a few days exploring the area.

Reviews

We arrived at Mere Hamard on the hottest day of the year but our spacious room was surprisingly cool despite the lack of air conditioning. Our meal in the delightful, shaded courtyard was spectacular. The breakfast, served in a room above the restaurant, was also excellent.

Torrens

Beautiful old hotel split across 2 separate buildings, with a contemporary feel, in a lovely village. They went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable in the intense heat wave by supplying room fans and complementary water. Wonderful restaurant with a delicious menu and enormous wine list! It’s worth visiting for the food alone. We hope to return

Perfectly delightful little hotel in a quiet location. Stayed for one night on our way to the Dordogne but next time we'll stay longer. Very comfortable room and delicious food!
