The Experience
Surrounded by fields and forest with views of the distant belfry of a ruined abbey, the setting feels as old as the house. Ochre walls, faded green shutters, terracotta floors and understated colours give the place an easy elegance, while richly hued Zellige tiles bring a flourish to the pretty bathrooms.
Eight bedrooms across the main house and wing mean plenty of room for sociable groups and extended families. The two main doubles have en suites; the six other bedrooms share two bathrooms. Gather the gang in the original sitting room with its enormous stone fireplace and let the younger ones retreat to the TV and games room upstairs. The kitchen has a rustic charm and the generous farm table has plenty of space for sharing the prep.
Outside, there’s a beautifully landscaped garden and stone pool surrounded by cypress, pine and palm trees. Long, lazy lunches on the grapevine-covered terrace are what holidays like this are all about.

Location
The neighbourhood
Nearby Montreuil-Bellay has a remarkable riverside restaurant, L'Auberge des Isles, where you dine in the shade of a mulberry tree. There’s an excellent Friday market at the Abbaye d'Asnières (five mins’ drive). Taste local wines at Domaine de Fosse-Sèche in Brossay (2km) or at Le Puy Notre Dame (10km), visit the zoo at Doué-la-Fontaine (13km). Montsoreau and Fontevraud are less than half an hour.
Local points of interest from Caroline Ruszkowski
- Discover a delicious restaurant with an amazing location: Auberge des Isles at Montreuil-Bellay.
- Montreuil-Bellay castle is a gem, about 10 minutes by car.
- Doué-la-Fontaine's Zoo, about 5km away.
- A market we love to go: Saumur on Saturday mornings.
- A charming event not to be missed: on Friday mornings, Abbaye d'Asnières country market. Small and charming, nested next to an ancient abbey, and by a goat farm.
- Book a wine tasting at Fosse-Sèche, about 2km away – they have the finest wine of Loire Valley.
