The Experience

This old farmhouse has been converted into a comfortable and airy home with a light-filled sitting-room and space for everyone to spread out. Set within nine acres of garden, orchard and woodland, you might even see deer, red squirrels and hares about.

Let yourself in and settle in with a bottle of wine; if you’re arriving late, ask your hosts about having some food shopping waiting for you. The kitchen is very well equipped and spacious enough for a couple of cooks – it leads onto the terrace where you can take in the stunning valley views whilst you dine. On the other side of the house, you’ll find another covered terrace, the large pool and a games room with ping pong and mini football.

Detailed suggestions are left of where to eat and what to do during your stay. Although it feels very peaceful and remote here, the nearest restaurant is a five-minute drive away in Castelnau-Montratier. Explore pretty bastide villages and fortified castles nearby; kayak on the Lot and Aveyron rivers when you’re feeling adventurous.

Reviews

We had a lovely break at La Borde Basse, and congratulate you for having made such very well thought out and restful home. Thank you too for being so responsive to our queries during the stay. There was much to enjoy in the garden and pool - Oscar especially enjoyed meeting little green frogs, deer, butterflies, many crickets and grasshoppers. We also saw hares, fox, and heard pied flycatchers, nuthatches and several woodpeckers. Thank you too for your many information sheets, everything was very clear and organised, and your friendly team seemed to go about their work very efficiently.

We had a wonderful time, thank you very much! If I were to pick a single word to sum it up for the grownups it would be 'relaxing' which was exactly what we all needed and a very rare thing to achieve with the children!! The children had a brilliant time and so together with the house and grounds and location it made for a really good holiday all round! We were also extremely taken with Castlenau-Montratier - what a fantastic village you have just up the road.

We have had lovely days here and a wonderful holiday. We are so glad you share La Borde Basse - it is a remarkable place. Thank you so much.

A truly sublime spot for a family holiday. The gardens are a dream, giving a true sense of peace and tranquility. The views from the terraces are hypnotic. The farmhouse , built in 1834 is comfortable, with loads of 'olde worlde' charm. This comfortable family holiday home is ideal for multi-generational holidays, with a little something for everyone to enjoy - the pool, the grounds, the wildlife.

We have thoroughly enjoyed a very happy week at La Borde Basse. Wall to wall sunshine & many adventures. St Antonin-Noble-Val was absolutely perfect. We took a picnic & paddled our way down the river. We mentioned your name & we got a 10% discount! We also visited the lovely family of fruit farmers on the west side of Castelnau-Montratier & they were quite delightful & sold us the most delicious apricots along with apples, greengages, melons & nectarines. Huge thanks to you both and we very much hope to return to your beautiful home again.

We had the MOST wonderful time at La Borde Basse, thank you so much, your house is beautiful, and the views are just stunning we really did have an incredible week. Don’t worry - I did read the note in the house so we were watering the plants! We did have a little rain (always at night though!) so they should pretty healthy.

Back again! Just so hard to resist the call of the countryside views and comfort of the house. The weather has been amazing and we were pleasantly surprised by how much more we enjoyed our swim with the change to salt water. We have such a great time every time we come and still feel a sense of achievement if we manage to keep the pool cover lined up when reeling it up! Thank you Martin and Fiona for opening up your gorgeous home and allowing others to share in its comfort and beauty.

This was our 3rd visit to La Borde Basse and I’m sure it won’t be our last. The weather was mixed for the first week but dry and hot for the second. Villa was clean and tidy as previous visits. We tried the go-kart racing track just outside Cahors, on the entrance road to the A20 – well worth a visit. Many memorable meals in the village and Lauzerte. We look forward to returning soon.

J, Chepstow

I can’t say enough good things about La Borde Basse. No detail has been overlooked with everything one could ask for in the way of comfort & amenities. The location is stunning & sitting on the terrace in the evening listening to the frogs in the pond was so relaxing. Very comfortable beds with nice linen & towels, and plenty of hot water. So much to see nearby with St. Antonin-Noble-Val being one of our favourites along with the Gardens of Erignac.

Location

The neighbourhood

It’s wonderfully rural here - you’re surrounded by 3.5 hectares of meadow and woodland – look out for deer and hares in the garden. Castelnau-Montratier is a five-minute drive away and has tennis courts, restaurants on the town square, a market on Sundays and a supermarket. Find more restaurants, shops and markets in historic Cahors (25-minute drive), a pretty city with half-timbered houses and a striking medieval bridge, now a UNESCO world heritage site.

Local points of interest from Martin and Fiona Lingeman

  • Two miles away in the arcaded central square of Castelnau-Montratier, as well as the Sunday morning market there is a local produce market with live music on Wednesday evenings in July and August. Have supper at a café in the square and watch the fun!
  • The historic and attractive small towns of Montpezat-de-Quercy and Lauzerte (once an English garrison town!) are both within half an hour's drive. Take a stroll and explore, have a drink, and maybe end up with supper at one of several restaurants.
  • In Cahors, combine a trip to the market on a Wednesday or Saturday morning with a visit to the mediaeval Pont Valentré bridge, a UNESCO world heritage site. Follow that with lunch at a restaurant overlooking the river Lot, or a trip on the river itself!
  • Twenty minutes west of Cahors along the banks of the Lot river, the stunning historic village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie clings to a cliff overhanging the river. After exploring the narrow streets take a cruise down the river from the bank below the village.
  • Perched on the edge of a ravine, the extraordinary vilage of Rocamadour is the second most-visited site of pilgrimage in all of France. On the way there, try something different with a boat trip on the underground river in the Gouffre de Padirac caves!
  • Probably the most popular family excursion from La Borde Basse is to the delightful small town of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, set in the beautiful and dramatic Aveyron gorge. Take a picnic, hire some kayaks or canoes and spend time exploring the river.
