The Experience

The mill ponds and the stream burble along merrily, little birds swoop and trill, the setting is quite divine and you will feel charmed by it all. A glazed door takes you into the mellow stone barn and the gorgeous living space: a massive open log fire can be lit when it’s chilly, there are big squashy sofas and plenty of armchairs, colours are bright and books beckon.

The well-kitted-out kitchen hides in a corner and has all the bells and whistles you need for cooking even grand meals – you eat at a large wooden table inside or out on the decking and you’re in striking distance of some superb villages and markets. The main bedroom is up wooden stairs and has a shower and separate loo (there’s a full bathroom downstairs too) and up more stairs is a mezzanine for two adults on a double sofa bed plus a cot.

Set off on lovely walks, have a sundowner on the deck.

Reviews

If you imagine a perfect French rural retreat and match it with some luxury then you have found Blanc at the Moulin de Malecoste. The living space is a delight summer and winter, bedroom and bathrooms sheer luxury and finishes exceptional. Outside is a rural idyll, with a sunny deck to enjoy al fresco meals, hidden garden nooks, abundant flowers and babbling streams. You will not want to leave!

John & Wendy, Dorset

Our perfect stay in April prompted us to return to Moulin de Malecoste, again in September 2025 to explore more of the area and once again immerse ourselves in the comfort and luxury of the mill. This time we chose Blanc, and once again, we were certainly not disappointed. Although different in layout to Rouge, Blanc offered the same sense of space and comfort, clearly reflecting the thoughtful design and attention to detail throughout. As before, our excursions were always a pleasure. Travelling through the surrounding area, with its calm and rural charm, made even the drives enjoyable.

This was our second stay at Moulin de Malecoste, and it truly feels like a home away from home. We stayed in the Blanc accommodation, which was perfect for the two of us, with a wonderfully relaxed and cosy atmosphere. On the recommendation of our lovely host, we visited Martel almost every day—and it certainly did not disappoint. The restaurants and vibrant atmosphere were exceptional. We also spent time exploring nearby highlights such as Rocamadour and Collonges-la-Rouge, both of which were absolutely stunning. As always, our stay was nothing short of perfect. We look forward to returning!

Location

The neighbourhood

In Sarrazac there's a good restaurant at La Bonne Famille hotel, and there are several more to be found in Martel, 15 minutes away. There are many pretty villages nearby, some wonderful walks and cycles through the countryside. For stocking up Les Quatre-Routes has a supermarket, organic shop, pharmacy etc. as well as an art gallery.

Local points of interest from Heather & Rad

  • Moulin de Malecoste is surrounded by unspoilt French countryside with rolling hills, forests, and walnut groves - a wonderful setting for scenic hikes and cycles. The area is peaceful and quiet, away from the busy tourist hotspots.
  • Many beautiful towns and villages are a short drive, such as the charming medieval ‘town of the seven towers’ Martel (13 mins), the dramatic cliffside village of Rocamadour (35 mins), and Collonges-la-Rouge (20 mins) - a ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’.
  • Stock up at traditional French markets like Brive-la-Gaillarde, Meyssac, Martel or Souillac. Visit a farm or book a local produce experience to try specialties of our region, including duck, foie gras, truffles, walnuts, and local wines.
  • Adventure seekers can explore the spectacular underground caves at Gouffre de Padirac (35 mins) or take a hot air balloon ride over castles and valleys. Outdoor activities on the Dordogne river: canoe, kayak, fish, swim, or enjoy a picnic on the banks.
  • Formal gardens of interest within a 40-minute drive: Marqueyssac is romantic and flowing with scenic views, while Eyrignac is a symmetrical formal garden designed with classic French precision. The tranquil Carsac Water Gardens are well worth a visit.
  • Visit museums and abbeys (including links to Coco Chanel and Josephine Baker history nearby), browse brocante markets for antiques, explore medieval villages and historic sites.
