The Experience

The open-plan living and dining area, stylish yet homely, is filled with natural light; relax on squashy sofas among the contemporary and antique furniture. The well-equipped kitchen is to the side, with lots of white crockery on country kitchen racks – it’s a convivial space for cooks and those who like to join in or chat. You’re left local wine and fresh fruit.

On the ground floor there’s a shower and loo, up a handmade oak staircase is a generous double with en suite bathroom, then on the top floor another double (which can be a twin) with its own shower room. If you’re a larger party, the opposite gîte, Bleu, can be used for overflow but it can’t be booked individually. All bedrooms have delightful views.

The mill sits happily on the side of rolling hills with greenery and trees all around. Al fresco meals on the deck will be spent listening to the gentle sound of water from the ponds and stream.

Reviews

Rouge at Moulin de Malecoste will fulfil your French country holiday dream. A home from home. There are two other gîtes although one is rarely let and the other at a discreet distance. You have your own private space for al fresco breakfast. Inside is total comfort with a touch of luxury. Bedrooms are spacious and bathrooms are a treat, one with roll-top bath and a view of the stars.

John & Wendy, Dorset

We stayed at Moulin de Malecoste in the gite Rouge in April 2025, and from the moment we arrived, the calm, peaceful, and unique setting of the mill completely enveloped us—our journey instantly felt like a distant memory. The accommodation was spacious, with beautifully appointed rooms and excellent amenities. It was clear that a great deal of thought and care had gone into creating a space that felt both comfortable and welcoming. With such an idyllic base, exploring the surrounding area was a true pleasure.

Andrew, London

We had the most wonderful stay at Moulin de Malecoste! The Rouge accommodation was beautifully decorated and exactly what we had hoped for. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed, and the two bedrooms made the space feel especially spacious and comfortable. The surrounding area has so much to offer, from delicious food markets to fantastic sightseeing opportunities. We thoroughly enjoyed relaxing on the property, particularly spending time in the beautiful courtyard. We are already looking forward to returning soon!

Location

The neighbourhood

The feel is quite remote with hills behind you and fields all around, but Sarrazac is only 1km, where you'll find a good restaurant in the hotel, and Casillac is 2km. It's a short drive to Les Quatre-Routes (eight minutes) for a mini market, organic shop and pharmacy as well as places to eat. Martel and the surrounding villages have markets. The mainline station and airport are both at Brive.

Local points of interest from Heather & Rad

  • Moulin de Malecoste is surrounded by unspoilt French countryside with rolling hills, forests, and walnut groves - a wonderful setting for scenic hikes and cycles. The area is peaceful and quiet, away from the busy tourist hotspots.
  • Many beautiful towns and villages are a short drive, such as the charming medieval ‘town of the seven towers’ Martel (13 mins), the dramatic cliffside village of Rocamadour (35 mins), and Collonges-la-Rouge (20 mins) - a ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’.
  • Stock up at traditional French markets like Brive-la-Gaillarde, Meyssac, Martel or Souillac. Visit a farm or book a local produce experience to try specialties of our region, including duck, foie gras, truffles, walnuts, and local wines.
  • Adventure seekers can explore the spectacular underground caves at Gouffre de Padirac (35 mins) or take a hot air balloon ride over castles and valleys. Outdoor activities on the Dordogne river: canoe, kayak, fish, swim, or enjoy a picnic on the banks.
  • Formal gardens of interest within a 40-minute drive: Marqueyssac is romantic and flowing with scenic views, while Eyrignac is a symmetrical formal garden designed with classic French precision. The tranquil Carsac Water Gardens are well worth a visit.
  • Visit museums and abbeys (including links to Coco Chanel and Josephine Baker history nearby), browse brocante markets for antiques, explore medieval villages and historic sites.
