The Experience

Amongst flower-filled gardens and surrounded by woodland is a collection of ancient stone buildings. The artist owners live in one and you stay in another – it’s nicely private. Step into the light-filled space, cosy with Persian rugs, antique furniture and plenty of books. The living room, well kitted-out kitchen and en suite master bedroom are on this floor. Downstairs is a twin with shower room.

Children will love collecting eggs from the hens and meeting the friendly cats. The gardens teem with wildlife: watch the buzzards; rise at dawn to spot the deer. Take a book to a quiet spot; there’s a hammock and tree swing outside too. A stone hangar has been converted into a chill out space; perfect for meals, games and lounging.

Go river swimming, head out on trails into the forest and down the gorge. It’s a short drive or decent hike to Saint-Antonin which buzzes with restaurants, cafés and shops. The Sunday market is not to be missed.

Reviews

It is one of the most beautiful, quite and peaceful settings. The home overlooks and is above the sea of clouds that sometime hovers over St Antonin. The house is perfectly designed, and with incredibly good taste, comfortable and so beautiful and calming to the mind. There are walks in the forest, and hills all around, and one of the most enjoyable moments is breakfast outside in the garden, in December with the sun out and just a sweater on. Spring or summer then must simply be some sort of paradise. The hosts are so kind, and may others get to enjoy this amazing place.

Elina, Paris

Our stay at Maison D’Artiste at the Rustic Retreat was a truly wonderful experience, and gave us the time and space to fully unwind. The house was well equipped, tastefully decorated and furnished, and beautifully positioned with stunning early morning views. The owners, Sasha and Mark, who live in the property next door were easily contactable, and happy to answer any questions we had about the property and locality. They provided a wealth of useful information and suggestions of places to visit nearby. We will definitely stay again as there is so much more to explore, as well as re-visit.

Claire, Bath

This is a beautiful house set in beautiful gardens, in a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. The history and patrimony of the immediate area is rich and seemingly endless from architectural gems to the landscape with limstone escarpments and rolling valleys. The Bonnette river for trout on the fly is really good. The house is tastefully renovated and feels like home immediately, nothing is missing. Excellent idea La Salle indoor outdoor living room . Great family place or just for relaxing.

Aaron, London

Escape the 21st century and enjoy the tranquillity and sumptuous bohemian charms of Sasha and Mark's very cool retreat. Artists and nature lovers alike will love it - as will the kids.

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest town, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, is a five-minute drive or a 35-minute hike through the woods (perhaps more on the way back up!). Le Festin de Babette is one of the best restaurants to eat in, there's an organic farmer's market every Thursday and a huge regional one on Sundays selling everything from food to flowers and clothes. There's good river swimming and a kayak centre here.

Introducing

Sasha & Mark Drummond-Lee

Sasha and Mark, both artists, fell in love with this beautiful place years ago, and thanks to Mark’s talents as a mason and carpenter, they've created their family home here and this gorgeous retreat. Their art collection adorns the walls, the furniture is from Morocco, the Far East and French antique markets and everything has been carefully curated. They're on hand if you need them for anything.
