The Experience

Marika and Pierre live in their 19th-century redbrick mansion and have converted their two outbuildings into three spaces to stay. L’Orangerie is split over two floors: a suite and kitchenette upstairs and a twin/double on the ground floor. Le Lavoir with its river-facing terrace also has a kitchenette – it’s perfect for a couple. All have separate entrances.

Those with a kitchenette can opt for a self-catering option, but if you’re having breakfast, stroll to the conservatory in the main house for a spread of charcuterie, cheeses, cold meats, pastries and homemade jams. You’ll be surrounded by homemade cushions, curtains and antiques – Marika and Pierre are passionate collectors.

Ask about hikes, horse riding and fishing nearby. The village has a deli, restaurants and a bakery, or you can drive to Bernay in 20 minutes for supermarkets, antique shops and trains into Paris. You’re only 8km off the motorway from Calais and 1.5 hours’ drive from the ferry terminal at Caen.

Very helpful, welcoming hosts. We felt extremely well looked after. Marika was in touch over two days organising dinner for us and was very patient and helpful when our timings changed. What a delightful home, beautifully restored and updated, and with much care put into the details of the rooms. Lovely breakfast, with home made jam. Another time we are keen to try the wash house, sitting directly on the river.

Location

The neighbourhood

Montreuil-l'Argillé is a typical Norman country town with half-timbered houses and is set in a valley with a river running through it. It’s an hour and a half from the ferry at Caen and just off the main road leading to Alençon and the Loire Valley, so would make for a good overnight stop. Stroll into town to eat at The Hostel Trout or La Petite Auberge, or drive - La Marigotière Bouget and L’Orbecquoise are about ten minutes away. For sightseeing, the baroque 17th-century Château de Beaumesnil is a 25-minute drive.

  • Enjoy the great fishing and pedestrian excursions nearby. 16 km away there is a 9-hole golf course and horse riding just 3 km away.
  • Visit the Château de Beaumesnil, Basilique de Lisieux and the Saint Germain de Livet castle museum.
  • An hour away by car: the famous seaside resorts of Trouville and Deauville.
  • Explore the must-see port of Honfleur: a city of impressionist painters, an historic old town, museums and the Normandy bridge.
  • A lot of other day excursions, such as the Château de Vandeuvre, the distillerie of Château du Breuil and the Graindorge cheese factory...
  • Where to eat? In the village: -the restaurant "l'auberge de la truite." in the next village, two restaurants: 1) L'Orbecquoise;2)le moulin du Fossard.You can also have meals in the shops of the village , to warm in the kitchen of your suite.

Introducing

Marika Koch

Marika and Pierre bought this place years ago but as they were working full time in Paris they only had weekends for restoration duty. They started working on the outbuildings for the B&B in 2015, retired a year later and now live in Normandy permanently – although they love visiting Paris when they can. Marika’s love of interiors and fabrics is evident in the furniture, collected from antiques markets, and the hand sewn curtains. They want guests to have a peaceful time indoors and also in the little corners of the garden, or on the big veranda with a cup of tea.
