The Experience

A brilliant marriage of old stone, modern design and reclaimed timbers, the U-shaped Normandy farmhouse is so cleverly linked that you don’t notice the joins. The pebbled courtyard on one side, the pool and deck on the other send light through generous windows onto the squishy sofas, distressed brocante, glorious timber gallery and gilt frames (James dealt in antiques and still can’t resist collecting) of the huge living area which feels both luxuriously sophisticated and totally relaxed.

The kitchen is filled with everything the modern cook could want and James leaves an unusually generous welcome basket. You can keep an eye on the children in the pool while rustling up that feast of local specialities. The double rooms are lovely, downstairs in contemporary style, upstairs more romantically antique, and bathrooms have good-sized showers.

You’ll find bikes waiting so venture out to explore markets, beaches, pretty towns.

Reviews

A lovely house for a week with family and friends. Bedrooms adapted to all ages, antiques galore, lots of games for the kids, and bikes for trips to the beach.

Chris, Nottinghsm

We had a wonderful time here with ages from 8 to 70s. Everyone enjoyed the pool which is deep enough for adults to swim the entire length so small non-swimmers would need help. The youngsters appreciated the room to play the wide selection video games and football-table without disturbing the adults. Having good weather and a hectic life at home, we didn't feel the need to explore much because it was so relaxing at the house.

Joan, Woodbridge

We had a wonderful time at La Brocanterie. It is a stylish, well maintained and comfortable house and provides generous accommodation for a large group. We loved the amazing collections that James has displayed in the house. The pool was enjoyed by all 3 generations and the children loved their little 'den' and the toys and books in it. The coast has some beautiful, deserted beaches. One of the nicest holiday lets we have stayed in! Many thanks James for your recommendations and advice.

Dorothy, London

We had a really lovely three generation family holiday here. James has a large, comfortable and very well equipped house full of weird and wonderful collections. And he provided us with many useful hints on local events and places to visit, all of which proved to be interesting and fun.

Robert, Folkestone

A big thank you to James. We had a great time, three generations and plenty to do and see round & about. Great restaurants close by and it was wonderful to join in all the D-Day 80th anniversary celebrations.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're just 5kms from the coast so you can buy mussels and oysters direct from the growers, or eat moules frites washed down with local wine at one of many restaurants and pop-up shacks in the summer. Spend a day in Granville - the Old Town has museums and galleries and you can visit Christian Dior's house. Play golf, ride a horse along the beach, try sand yachting or simply laze by the pool.

Local points of interest from James Mayhew

  • If La Brocanterie is too big for your group, or already booked; Dont despair! Take a look at my other Gite, (new to Sawdays this year, 2023), La Reverie, with three double bedrooms(en suite), private pool, hot tub, playroom, officially 5* rated.
  • La Cale, everyone's favourite beach shack for the best moules frites and sausages is 10 mins away. Get a table outside with your feet in the sand, and watch the the sunset. Or try the BOA, a pop up bar at Gouville beach for great tapas, beers and cocktails
  • For a bit of brocante visit La Cle du Temps. (10 mins away A huge 'Depôt Vente' full of anything and everything used and quirky .. New things arrive every day. Prices are reduced on all items regularly until they sell. My guests adore going here!
  • If you're coming to this part of France you'll already know about its history.. La B is ideally placed for day trips to Mt St Michel, the landing beaches, the Bayeux tapestry, the Cite de la Mer (visit a nuclear submarine!), And masses more
  • Take one of La B's bikes and bicycle to the village for your baguette & croissants, or go for a leisurely ride. The local area is flat and has plenty of recommended routes to follow.
  • Plenty of activities abound, from playgrounds, mini golf and pedaloes, to horse riding on the beach, sand yachting, kite surfing, stand up boarding, tennis, golf, bungy jumping, forest adventures, paint ball, laser game, karting; something for everyone.
