The Experience
Sweep up your own private driveway to this lovely old farmhouse, totally independent of the château and other farm buildings – you’ll feel very private. You overlook a large, walled apple orchard of heritage cider varieties. The sociable open-plan sitting room has a merry fireplace for chilly days (logs provided), pretty fabrics and plenty of comfortable seating.
Cooks will be happy with the efficient kitchen and you’ll find the basics you need for cooking in the store cupboard along with the big Smeg oven. A gravel patio in front of the house is a fine place for a barbecue or an al fresco lunch and there’s plenty of elegant garden furniture.
Bedrooms (one downstairs and three up) are spacious and charming, all with en suite bathrooms and views over the gardens and courtyard. It’s a short walk or cycle into Courtomer for your morning croissants and baguettes – bring them back warm and enjoy the peace and quiet of this rural spot.

Location
The neighbourhood
The market in Courtomer is on Fridays and Sundays for a range of local produce, including some amazing cheeses. Mortagne-au-Perche and Bellême (both a 35-min drive) are the most famous market towns of the Perche region and worth travelling to. They are also heaving with wonderful little shops, especially antiques. Garden lovers can visit Jardins de la Mansonière, 40 mins away.
Local points of interest from Elizabeth Bonner
- Monet’s Garden at Giverny. Claude Monet's garden at Giverny is probably the most famous garden in France and is less than two hours from the Château. Monet painted some of his most famous works whilst living here, including the Waterlilies series
- The village of Camembert has a museum that explains the history of the cheese and is worth a visit. From there you can drive on to Livarot and stop off at the Graindorge Cheese Village where you can watch the different steps of the cheese making.
- The cider route starts 30 minutes from the Chateau and is a lovely way to discover the area. The 45K route is well signed and takes you through winding, tree lined country lanes, cider orchards and villages of half-timbered houses all decked out in their Sunday best.
- Bellême - Just a short drive south from the Chateau lies the lovely old town of Bellême. From Thursdays to Sundays the village comes alive. It is home to several artisans and some lovely antique shops. For golfers the course at Bellême is highly rated, yet rarely busy with modest green fees.
- Lisieux… This is one of the main sites of pilgrimage in France, second only to Lourdes and is just a short drive from the Château. It was the home of Ste. Thérèse, more popularly known as “The Little Flower”, from age four until her death in 1897.
- A monastery and fortress, Le Mont Saint Michel rises from the sea just off the coast of Normandy. Mont St Michel is a favorite day trip amongst our guests. Plan to start out early so that you arrive before the place gets too busy.
