The Experience

Heaven for horse-lovers: two large, bright, smart gites at either end of a converted coach house, with stabling in between. The friendly Holfords live in the adjoining main house on their showcase 18th-century stud farm. They are Australian and English, both vets and thoroughly hands-on with their 100-or-so well bred show jumpers. Watch them training and stroll in the impressive gardens: formal French, with lily pond and carp lake. There are also two tennis courts, a games room, and a covered (unheated) swimming pool. Indoors all is impeccable too: the look: classic, sober and uncluttered. Sturdy mahogany sleigh beds have beautifully puffed-up duvets and both French and English pillows. Attic ‘dormitory’ singles are snug under slanting beams and skylights. Almé, with spectacular overhead carpentry, has a spacious kitchen/diner and a separate sitting area looking out of arched windows. Baloubet has a first floor triple-aspect kitchen/diner leading to a balcony with more lush Normandy country views. Nearby markets provide the wherewithal to exercise the excellent kitchen kit. Major sights surround you.

Reviews

Sue, Waterlooville

Haras du Gazon is the most wonderful holiday venue for large groups of extended family wanting their own spaces to eat and sleep, whilst also enjoying time together. We were in awe of all that Tim and Anne have created on this beautiful stud farm in the middle of the delightful French countryside. The place is lovingly cared for with much attention to detail. Having the whole site to ours, our bunch of 8 grandsons were able to play without us feeling anxious about either their safety or disturbing any neighbours. Tim and Anne are great hosts and we recommend them highly to all future guests.

Three generations of our family spent a very happy week here. A very spacious and well equipped gite in beautiful surroundings. Plenty to see and do in this quiet and less visited corner of Normandy. An easy drive to the WW2 beaches and fabulous markets to visit. The foals with their mothers were adorable!

Dee, High Wycombe

This was our 3rd time staying at Haras du Gazon. Such a beautiful place. So peaceful and lovely. The accommodation is really good quality and very spacious and well appointed. The location is ideal for many tourist attractions but with the feel of also being in the middle of nowhere We just love it. Anne and Tim are very friendly hosts who ensure all needs are accommodated. Our kids have the freedom to roam in a gated environment. Highly recommended

We had a truly wonderful week in gite Alme at Haras du Gazon....well worth having to self isolate on our return! The gite itself was very spacious, really well equipped, spotlessly clean and a great space to spend time with the family. The swimming pool, next to the pond and rose garden, was really clean with plenty of sun loungers to relax. We also enjoyed using the tennis courts and the games room and the roads around the property are great for walking and cycling. There's so much to do in the surrounding area too...I wish we'd had longer to explore. Thank you Anne and Tim!

What can I say... wonderful stay in the larger gite. Family of 10 of us and so much space to all get together or rooms large enough for a bit of peace .. great games room was a god send as well as the indoor pool u heaters but you soon warmed up .. wonderful setting and large grounds to walk round, see the wonderful wildlife loved the giant look like guinea pigs forgot there proper names but wanted to take 1 home .. The place is great for all you horsey lovers they are on your door stop. Kids love to feed horses and foals every morning .. A must stay .. lovely owners very welcoming .

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sheila Anne Holford

  • Local circular 10km walk/cycle starting at our gates and following the quiet country lanes and greenways: 'Route des Haras'- passing by our neighbour, the famous thoroughbred horse stud: Fresnay-le-Buffard.
  • Evening boat cruise on nearby Rabodanges lake with wonderful candlelit dinner onboard.
  • Circular drive: 'Route de la Suisse Normande' - starting at nearby Falaise and taking in the local beauty spots and natural heritage of this region on a signposted easy 75km route just to the west of the Haras.
  • Cycle ride or hike on greenways( no motorised traffic) along the Veloroute Côte Fleurie Pays D'Auge: section 'Mezidon-Canon à Lisores': a beautiful broad track along the La Vie river valley passing by half timbered manor houses, orchards, Normande cows...
  • 'La Route des Saveurs' a drive of discovery of the lovely Pays d' Auge, taking in the ville de charme of historic Orbec with its famous ' Au Caneton' restarant, St Pierre Sur Dives with its The Monday market in the medieval hall, a marché traditionnel.
  • Hire canoes or kayaks for an hour or two or perhaps half day descent of the Orne river from Thury- Harcourt or Clécy.
